Guideline on text types used on Language B paper 2 HL

BLOG

Description: A blog can sort of online diary, whereas a diary is essentially private, the blog is
read by other people.
Audience: Remember your audience should be people who share your interests and ask your
readers to respond to your ideas.
Register: more formal than in a diary but keep it personal nonetheless.
Structure: There are two types of blog that share an important aspect: REFLECTION.

EDITORIAL

Description: Editorials represent the official view of the newspaper that is publishing them.
They are unsigned. They can offer an opinion or present a collective point of view on some
topical subject or piece of news. Editorials can explore a whole range of newsworthy issues,
events and ideas. They can inform, entertain or persuade.
Register: Formal
Structure

Headline Grabs readers’s attention and persuade them to read the


piece.
Introductory paragraph It also catches the readers’ attention. Explain the context and
background to the topic being discussed.
Main body and supporting Several paragraphs ( no specific number) that expand the
paragraphs topic linked to an angle and in fact prove your point of view.
The angle can be “one-sided” approach (it emphasises a
singles point) or it can be a “balanced” approach (there are
two sides to the issue or problem.) Make sure you provide
evidence in both cases.
Conclusion Remain main idea and suggest an appropriate course of
action or making a recommendation. (If writing about a
person, explain that person’s future plans).

LETTER

Description: formal correspondence used to write one or several recipients for a number of
reasons.
Register: Formal
Structure:

Salutation If you do not know the name of the person, begin with
the addressee’s title above the salutation line.
Name of company

Dear Sir, or Madam,

In case you know the name


Dear Mr/Mrs.______,

Introduction Tell who you are and state the purpose of the letter: to
make an enquiry, complain, request something, etc.
The main body Should support the relevant purpose of the letter.
Organise paragraphs into a clear, logical manner (PEE=
point, example and explanation).
Conclusion Thank them, restate your interest and close the letter.
Closing Yours sincerely,/Sincerely,
