QUESTIONS:
What are EMFs?
Electromotive force (EMF) is equal to the terminal
potential difference when no current flows. EMF and
terminal potential difference are both measured in volts,
however they are not the same thing. EMF is the amount of
energy provided by the battery to each coulomb of
charge passing through.

What are the sources of EMFs?

Electromagnetism, Photoelectric, Thermoelectric,
Piezoelectric and Chemical.

Are EMIFs like X-rays? Give the

similarities and differences.
X-rays by themselves are certainly a more harmful form of
Electromagnetic Field Radiation. This is primarily due to
the fact that whereas most EMF radiation.

What can EMFs do to a person? Cite

Situations.
EMFs influence metabolic processes in the human body
and exert various biological effects on cells through a
range of mechanisms. EMF disrupts the chemical structures
of tissue since a high degree electromagnetic energy
absorption can change the electric current in the body.
Examples are the fields produced by kitchen appliances.

QUESTIONS:
How do I reduce my exposure to EMFs?
1. Don't sit or linger near appliances.
2. Put your phone down.
3. Use the speaker function or earbuds with your phone.
4. Don't carry your phone in a pocket.
5. Unplug occasionally from electronic devices and
electricity.

What is a gauss?
The gauss, symbol G, is a unit of measurement of magnetic
induction, also known as magnetic flux density. The unit is
part of the Gaussian system of units, which inherited it
from the older CGS-EMU system. It was named after the
German mathematician and physicist Carl Friedrich Gauss
in 1936.

Are there natural sources of EMFs? Are

they IEke the fields created by power
lines? Can these cause health effects?
Yes, there are natural sources of EMFs. Electromagnetic
fields associated with electricity are a type of low
frequency, and they can come from both natural and
man-made sources. Extremely low frequency and
radiofrequency EMFs are unlikely to cause any adverse
health effects. Power lines are also considered safe, as
long as you keep a safe distance from them.

QUESTIONS:
What is a safe distance from a magnetic
field source?
With most household appliances the magnetic field
strength at a distance of 30 cm is well below the
guideline limit for the general public of 100 µT. The table
illustrates two main points: First, the magnetic field
strength around all appliances rapidly decreases the
further you get away from them.

Why isn't the federal government setting

a standard for EMF levels? Why have
some states sets standards?
There isn't federal government setting a standard for EMF
levels because there are no U.S. Federal standards
limiting residential or occupational exposure to electric
and magnetic fields (EMF) from power lines. Some states
sets standards because they are concerned about the
transmission line fields.

Can we make our own EMF

measurement?
An electromagnetic field, or EMF, meter measures the
relative strength of magnetic fields. ... If you want to build
an EMF meter, you can purchase all the necessary parts at
your local hardware store for just a few dollars. You can
have your EMF meter assembled and testing magnetic
fields in less than an hour.
