APPENDIX III ISSUES ARISING FROM THE CIRCUMSTANCES OF USURPED/REUSED
TOMBS

The reuse of tombs was perhaps more widespread than one might think. There were various

reasons as to why a tomb may be reallocated to another: this paper does not concern itself with

such matters. What is at issue is the consequence of these actions for identifying what parts of

tombs belong to the various individuals who used the tomb. A case in point is that of the tomb

of Nb-kAw-Hr idw [32], imy-rA 5maw. The principal publication of this tomb by Hassan mentions

the issue. 7 Some attempts are made within the publication to differentiate between the evidence

applicable to either the second owner Nb-kAw-Hr idw [32], and the first owner, Axt-Htp Hmi.

Hassan records erasures and other changes, but unfortunately, there is no conclusive summary

allocating titles to each of the tomb owners.

Strudwick set out to remedy this by publishing a list of titles applicable to each owner.8 In

completing his analysis, Strudwick was unable to re-examine the mastaba as it was being used for

storage.9 Each reader faces the same problem as Strudwick in attempting to identify the allocation

of titles between owners. I have used Strudwick’s allocation in the prosopography after reviewing

the article and considering Hassan’s work. I agree with his assessment that the blocks with titles

for Nb-kAw-Hr idw [32] now on the exterior of the mastaba do not show evidence of re-cutting –

but this comment is based on looking at a photograph, rather than physical examination.10 It is

on these blocks that we find the title imy-rA 5maw, Overseer of Upper Egypt. Others have differed in

their view and allocated the title to Axt-Htp Hmi.11 This clearly illustrates the issues that arise when

an excavator does not provide clear information on the changes/erasures made in such

circumstances.

7. Hassan, (1975a: 5).

8. Strudwick, (1982: 89-94).
9. Strudwick, (1982: 94-n5).
10. Hassan, (1975a: Plate LI C & Fig. 24), noted that the blocks were found in the mastaba. Strudwick (1982: 91)
notes that the blocks are now to be found on the exterior and certainly Plate LI C appears to have been
photographed in exterior light.
11. Kanawati, (2003a: 25-27), allocated the title of Overseer of Upper Egypt to Axt-Htp Hmi but noted that without
examining the tomb, it is difficult to tell which titles belong to which tomb owner.

13
APPENDIX III ISSUES ARISING FROM THE CIRCUMSTANCES OF USURPED/REUSED
TOMBS

Contrast this with the tomb of 1si. In this example, the excavator provides the reader with a

listing of titles allocated between the two tomb owners. This was admittedly a straightforward

case.12 A listing clearly separating names and titles was provided and the erasures are clearly

visible in both the photographs and line drawings accompanying the text.

My final comment on this is that it is preferable for excavators to assist readers by providing not

only the raw data, but to organise that data and reference it to drawings and photos so that

readers are in a position to make an informed judgement on the context under consideration.

14
APPENDIX IV CASE STUDY: DATING KAi

KAi [51] is currently the earliest known holder of the title: imy-rA 5maw. Thus dating KAi is

relevant to providing an indication of the timeframe when the position commenced. KAi’s tomb

was originally published by Mariette.13 There is agreement in the literature that KAi is dated to

Dynasty V, but there is some discussion as to exactly which reign to date him to. This short case

study assesses what we know in order to try and suggest a dating for KAi to be used in the

chronological listing of imyw-rA 5maw in Volume I, Chapter 5, Table 5.1. To make a case for the

dating of KAi, we need to consider the nature of evidence available. In considering the evidence

below, the reader is reminded that this is not a complete assessment of the evidence available, but

rather an attempt to consider the issues related to dating KAi. The assessment is primarily based

on the published information about the tomb in Mariette’s publication.

The following types of evidence are available:

– Mariette’s publication. 14

– The remains of the mastaba itself, which cannot be physically inspected for the

purposes of this case study, assuming access is even possible.

– The False Door in the Cairo Museum.

– Three offering bowls on stands in the Cairo Museum.

– A fragment held at the British Museum.

– Inscriptional evidence from the mastaba.

The Louvre Museum has a statue (E 3024) that is considered likely to be identified as KAi.15 The

statue has been dated to mid-Dynasty V.16

13. Mariette, (1889: 226-231, D19).

14. Mariette, (1889: 226-231, D19).
15. Ziegler, (1997: 104-8, #29). There is no definitive identification of the statue as a representation of KAi, rather
it is considered likely that it can be so identified. The statue includes a title for KAi that is only known for the
imy-rA 5maw and Vizier, KAi at that time: sAb aD-mr. There are other known individuals with the same name
but not title, hence it is suggested as likely that the statue is indeed of the Vizier, KAi. See also Metropolitan
Museum of Art, (1999: 362-364, #124).
16. Ziegler, (1997: 104, #29).

15
APPENDIX IV CASE STUDY: DATING KAi

The architectural information available to us can be summarised as follows:

Figure 1
Tomb plan: the mastaba of KAi [51]

– The mastaba plan (Figure 1) shows a secondary niche which has been enclosed by a

corridor. There is an entry point into a corridor chapel oriented north-south.17 It has

been suggested that the use of this chapel type in mastaba construction can be dated

between the reigns of Neuserre and Wenis.18 The plan also shows the entry point at

the southern end of the mastaba into a small room (b), which in turn leads into the

columned hall with four columns. The columned hall is oriented east-west.19

Willoughby-Winlaw has established a typology for columned halls which suggests

that this columned hall type can be dated to the period after Neuserre.20 The

material from which the mastaba is constructed is stone.21

17. Reisner chapel type 5a. See Reisner, (1942: 185); also Willoughby-Winlaw, (2007: 164, #125).

20. Willoughby Winlaw, (2007: 347, Table 5).
21. Kanawati, (1977: 121-2, #329).

16
APPENDIX IV CASE STUDY: DATING KAi

– Two False Doors were located in the mastaba.22 One had no inscriptions.23 The

other, with inscriptions is illustrated at Figure 2. It is damaged but has two sets of

jambs together with a central niche and is flanked by palace façade panelling.24 The

False Door does not appear to feature Torus moulding. The jambs each feature four

columns of text.25 Strudwick notes that the Viziers of Djedkare generally feature

four to five columns of text per jamb.26 Based on Mariette’s drawing at Figure 2

below, the jambs marked D and E appear to be of equal width (and presumably

height) when compared with each other. The jambs marked F and G also appear to

be of equal width when compared with each other. The central niche between the

jambs is very narrow. Rusch’s typological study suggests Dynasty V.27 The narrow

central niche is dated to Neuserre.28 The jamb structure suggests dating from the

reign of Menkauhor to the end of Dynasty V.29

17
APPENDIX IV CASE STUDY: DATING KAi

– The mastaba includes two serdabs – one south of the columned hall, oriented east-

west and one beside the north-south chapel. There are no connections on the plan

(Figure 1) between either of the serdabs and the hall or chapel. Lehmann suggests

there are no viewing slits.30 Willoughby-Winlaw developed a serdab typology for use

in her study of the Memphite cemeteries and concluded that the usage of the serdab

types constructed within this mastaba fall can be dated to the period from Sahure to

Neuserre.31

– The stone fragment held at the British Museum has been dated to Dynasty V.32

– Inscriptional evidence from the mastaba shows an offering formula including

Osiris.33 Such formulae start to appear in private tombs, but with no special

relationship to Osiris such as appeared in later periods.34

Baer has dated KAi to his period V C which is represents the mid period of Djedkare

to mid Wenis.35 Strudwick suggests that dating KAi in this manner would require

ignoring the fact that the False Doors of the Viziers of Djedkare feature cornice and

torus moulding.36 Of course, we cannot be certain from the drawings of Mariette

whether or not information is absent about the False Doors so all comments on

same must be considered as interim comments without conclusive evidence.

30. Lehmann, (2000: V3: S26). Lehmann also used Strudwick’s dating for her date.
31. Willoughby-Winlaw, (2007: 349, Table 6).
32. James, (1961: 22(5) & Plate XXI(5)).
33. Mariette, (1889:230).
34. Rusch, (1923: 124) notes that such formulae start to appear mid-Dynasty V. Also Otto, (1968: 26) who notes
the appearance of Osiris in both royal and non-royal worship in Dynasty V. Begelsbacher-Fischer,
(1981: 121-5) documents the appearance of Osiris but does not offer more accurate dating other than noting
the appearance of various forms of Osirian invocation from the middle of Dynasty V.
35. Baer, (1960, reprint 1973: #505).
36. Strudwick, (1985: 143).

18
APPENDIX IV CASE STUDY: DATING KAi

The evidence related to the plan of the mastaba suggests a dating for KAi [51] covering the period

from Neuserre to Wenis. The evidence from the False Door suggests dating from the reign of

Menkauhor to the end of Dynasty V. The nature of the serdabs suggests dating to the period

from the reign of Sahure to Neussere and the inclusion of the offering formula including Osiris

suggests dating after mid-Dynasty V. The tomb of KAi lies in the northern cemetery of Saqqara -

different location to other Viziers of Djedkare, who are buried nearer to the Step Pyramid.

Strudwick suggests that such a burial would make KAi unusual in terms of burial location: the

lone Vizier of Djedkare buried in the northern cemetery.37 Thus I tend to agree with Willoughby-

Winlaw’s dating of KAi to the period represented by the reigns of Neuserre to Djedkare.38

Without newer excavation information it is difficult to be any more precise.
