(a) What is meant by Hardware?

Hardware denotes the physical components of the Computer that can be seen and
touched. Examples include mouse, keyboard, Hard Disk Drive and monitor.

(b) Using the list of hardware items above, identify the following components
I. CPU type
Intel Pentium 64-bit dual core processor 3.7 GHz

II. Memory size

2 GB

III. Word size

64-bits or QWORD

IV. Hard disk capacity

160GB

V. Hard disk
SATAA HDD (7200 rpm)

(C) Name One output and One input device mentioned in the list above.
Output (19 LCD Monitor & HP Desk jet 6840C)
Input (APC Biometric reader & Logitech Webcam)

(D) State Two devices that can be used to protect your computer from fluctuation in electricity
I. Surge suppressor: diverts excess electrical voltage to the ground.
Ii: uninterruptible power supply (ups) : maintains a consistent supply of power to the computer

Question Two
A scanner and a barcode reader are computer-related hardware used in industry to make the work
of the employee easier and more efficient.

(a) State the function of a

I. Scanner
A scanner takes a picture of a document or an image, digitize it and present the information on a
computer screen.

II. Barcode reader

A barcode reader is an optical scanner used to read printed barcodes, decode the data contained in
the barcode and send the data to a computer.

(b) For each piece of hardware in (a), state the type of industry in which it would MOST
likely be used. Justify your answer
I. Educational institutions and government departments are mostly likely to use
scanners. In this era of digital communication scanners provide a fast means
of digitizing authentic hard copies of documents for onward distribution to
appropriate persons and offices in schools and government agencies.
II. A bar code reader is mostly used in retail businesses. It reads the bar code printed or pasted on
the package of an item. It’s a very efficient device in identifying items and their prices in retail
outlets.
(c)For Both the scanner and the barcode reader, state the job title of an individual who is MOST
likely to use this piece of equipment and clearly indicate how it makes their job more efficient.
I. A sales assistant in a retail shop uses a bar code reader to easily identify items and their prices
in order to prepare bills for customers.
II. A student applying for admission in an educational institution can easily scan his/her
documents and upload them to the database of the institution instead of physical transmitting the
documents. This saves time and money. Again, a secretary in a government agency can easily
scan a circular and distribute it electronically to all recipients in order to save time and cost.

Question Three
The computer is made up of two parts; that is the software and hardware component. In your
own words differentiate between the hardware and software part of a computer with examples.
The hardware components of the Computer are the physical parts of the Computer
that can be seen and touched while the software component is the instructions that
tell the hardware what to do and how to do it. Hardware components include
mouse, keyboard, scanner, printer and monitor. Software components include the
operating system (Windows), word processors (Microsoft Word), typing software
(Mavis Beacon) and presentation software (Microsoft PowerPoint)
