2. Risk Assessment – Understand the nature of the risk
Is carried out when there is uncertainty about how a hazard may
result in injury or illness

reasonably practicable
The ways of controlling risks are ranked from the highest level of
protection and reliability to the lowest by using the hierarchy

Section 2: Perform the WHS inspection and review
As part of your role as a WHSO, you are required to monitor the effectiveness of the Safety Management System
in the workplace through the execution of a Workplace WHS Inspection and assess the risk arising from work
carried out as part of the business or undertaking at least every 12 months and provide a Risk Assessment
Report to your PCBU.
The AWC Workplace Inspection Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) contains the criteria to conduct the WHS
Inspection and can be downloaded from AWC’s website.
As you have identified in the legislation, a WHSO has an obligation to undertake an inspection of the workplace.
Due to the size and widespread location of the work sites and projects of the AWC organisation, the WHS
inspection you will undertake will be conducted in small groups to undertake the following tasks:
1. Undertake a WHS Inspection of the work area as indicated by your Trainer; and
2. Identify at least two tasks that are or could be undertaken in the workplace that require controls to be
implemented to reduce risk to an acceptable level (I.E. tasks that require a risk assessment and note
these on the Checklist).
