1.1 Physical Quantities Kuantiti Fizik
1.1.1 Importance of Physics Kepentingan Fizik
1) There is a close relationship between the study of physics and other sciences, including
astronomy, biology, chemistry and geology.
Terdapat hubungan yang rapat antara kajian fizik dan Sains lain termasuk astronomi, biologi, kimia dan
geologi.
2) There is a close connection between physics and the practical developments in engineering,
medicine and technology.
Terdapat hubungan yang rapat antara fizik dan perkembangan praktikal dalam kejuruteraan, perubatan
dan teknologi.
3) The application of fundamental laws and theories has enabled engineers and scientists to put
satellites into orbit, receive information from space probes, and improve telecommunications.
Penggunaan perundangan fundamental dan teori telah membolehkan jurutera dan saintis untuk meletakkan
satelit ke dalam orbit, menerima maklumat daripada kuar angkasa, dan meningkatkan telekomunikasi.
4) Physics improves the quality of life, i.e. many home appliances function through the operation
of principles of physics.

1.1.2 Understanding Base Quantities and Derived

1.1.2.1 Physical Quantity Kuantiti Fizik
1) A quantity that is measurable is called a physical quantity.
Suatu kuantiti yang boleh diukur dikenali kuantiti fizik.
2) Quantities which cannot be measured are non-physical quantities.
Kuantiti-kuantiti yang tidak boleh diukur ialah kuantiti-kuantiti bukan fizik.
3) Physical quantities are categorized into base quantities and derived quantities.
Kuantiti-kuantiti fizik adalah dikelaskan kepada kuantiti-kuantiti asas dan kuantiti-kuantiti diperolehi.

1.1.2.2 Base Quantities Kuantiti-kuantiti Asas


1) Base quantities are the quantities that are conventionally accepted as functionally independent
of one another.
Kuantiti-kuantiti asas adalah kuantiti-kuantiti yang boleh diterima secara konvensional sebagai satu fungsi
secara bebas.
2) It is a quantity that cannot be defined in term of other physical quantity.
Kuantiti ini tidak boleh ditakrif dengan kuantiti fizik yang lain.
3) It is expressed as a numerical value in a particular unit of measurement. For example :
Ia dinyatakan sebagai nilai nombor dengan unit pengukuran yang spesifik. Sebagai contoh :
Length of a meter rule = 100 cm
Panjang pembaris meter = 100 cm

4) In 1960, an international conference in Paris had agreed to fix an international system of base
units for base quantities throughout the world. It is called the SI unit (Le Systeme International
d’Unites).
Pada tahun 1960, Persidangan Antarabangsa di Paris telah bersetuju untuk menetapkan sistem unit asas
antarabangsa untuk kuantiti asas di seluruh dunia. Ia dipanggil unit SI (Le Systeme International
D'menyatukan).
5) Table below shows five important base quantities and their corresponding SI units.

1.1.2.3 Derived Quantities Kuantiti-kuantiti


Terbitan
1) Derived quantities are physical quantities derived by combining base quantities.
Kuantiti-kuantiti terbitan ialah kuantiti-kuantiti fizik yang boleh diterbit daripada gabungan kuantiti-
kuantiti asas.
2) This can be done by multiplication or division or both.
Ini boleh dilakukan dengan pendaraban atau pembahagian atau kedua-duanya.
3) The unit for a derived quantity is known as a derived unit.
Unit untuk kuantiti terbitan dikenali sebagai unit terbitan.

1) Derived quantities and their units can be separated into their respective base quantities and
base units. For example, the unit of speed is metre per second or m s-1, which is in terms of the
base units metre and second.
Kuantiti-kuantiti terbitan dan unit mereka boleh dipisahkan ke dalam kuantiti=kuantiti asas masing dan

1) Scalar quantity Kuantiti skalar
a) Scalar quantities are quantities which are fully described by a magnitude alone.
Kuantiti-kuantiti scalar adalah kuantiti-kuantiti yang mempunyai magnitude sahaja.
b) Magnitude is the numerical value of a quantity.
Magnitud ialah nilai nombor bagi suatu quantity.
2) Vector quantity Kuantiti vektor
a) Vector quantities are quantities which are fully described by both a magnitude and a
direction.
