LESSON 1.3
LESSON 1.1 DRAMA AND FORMS OF FICTION

The stage is a remarkably necessary for the beauty appreciation of drama for being one
of the most fascinating genres of literature. Most of the people worldwide perceive this genre
very delightful because of its features that allow the readers to feel genuinely as it goes beyond
their imagination that happen when reading the story.

Drama is a theatrical term that deals with the art of play production and the collaboration
of stage, costumes, dialogue, synchronization of music, and all things that made the written
play into a theatrical performance.
Elements of Drama in the Modern Theatre
1. CHARACTERS are the people, and sometimes can be animals illustrated by the
actors/actress in the play.
➢ CHARACTERIZATION is the way on how the authors present the character

2. PLOT is the characteristics of development and structuring that depends on conflict,


suspense and mood to carry the action forward

3. THEME refers to the main idea of the play, it is also known as the soul of the play for it
bring lesson to the audience

4. SETTING refers to the time and place where the story happens

5. DIALOGUE is the words written by the writer and spoken by the actors/actress in the
drama

6. CONVENTION refers to the director and scriptwriters method and techniques used to
make a style of effect.
7. GENRE is the type of story being told and is decided by the writer.
8. AUDIENCE is the group of people who watch the play and the reason for the creation of
the play.

FORMS OF DRAMA
COMEDY refers to a play that meant to be harmonious with a happy and vivacious ending;
it is derived from the Greek word “komos” which means festivity or revelry
Example: Shakespeare’s A Midsummer’s Night Dream

TRAGEDY it is a play that is more serious and usually ends with a sad ending.
Example: Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet

MONODRAMA it is theatrical piece played by a single actor/actress that is usually portrays


one character.
Example: William Luce’s The Belle of Amherts

DANCE DRAMA refers with the dance movements and sometimes accompanied by
dialogue.

MUSICAL DRAMA is a type of drama wherein the actor/actress is telling the story through
dance and music.
Example: Andrew Lloyd Weber’s The Phantom of the Opera

PUPPET PLAY refers to the uses of different type of puppets including glove or hand
puppets, and the marionette on a string puppet.
Example: Rotten Teeth — And A Friend’s Advice

SHADOW PLAY refers to a show in wherein the shadows of puppets and sometimes live
actors are projected onto a lighted screen.
Example: Wayang Kulit Puppet

Drama
✓ Merriam Webster defines it as, “a composition in verse or prose intended to portray life
or character or to tell a story usually involving conflicts and emotions through action
and dialogue and typically designed for theatrical performance.”
✓ Derived from the Greek word “dran” meaning to do or to act
✓ Story told in dialogue form that is performed by actors for an audience
✓ A type of writing that develops plot and character through dialogue and action

Elements of Drama
Character- a person illustrate in drama
Plot- sequence of events
Theme- main idea of the play
Setting- where the story occurs
Dialogue- words spoken by the actor/actress
Convention- methods and techniques use by the scriptwriter and director
Audience- the reason for the creation of the play

Forms of Drama
Comedy- ends up with a happy ending
Tragedy- sorrowful event encountered by a heroic individual
Monodrama- played by a single actress
Dance drama- delivered through dancing
Musical Drama- production that combines acting, singing, and dancing
Puppet Play- the actors are puppets
Shadow Play- casted by the shadows of puppets
