3. Cull creative ideas from experiences through descriptive writing

What is Creative Writing?

Definitions are:

According to Bernales (2017) and Buhisan & Sayseng, 2016):

*Creative writing is a kind of writing that uses language in imaginative way and is
used to express one’s thoughts, feelings and emotions.

* Creative writing is the artistic expression through written word. It uses a language
that aims to entertain and captivate the audience.

1
What are the Benefits of Creative Writing?

According to Bernales (2017), the benefits of Creative Writing are as follows:

1. Thousands of jobs

Knowing how to write gives edge over other people. If you are excellent in writing
there are countless opportunities that you could reconsider as your dream job.

2. Creative Freedom

Writing as a profession gives you the right and authority over your works. You
can even access various types of job online but as writer it is advisable that you

Excuses to Avoid and Reasons for Writing

Rozakis (1997) as cited by Bernales, (2017) prepared the lists of excuses used by many
people to avoid writing:

1. I don’t have anything to write.

2. I’ll make fool of myself by failing.

3. I have a writer’s block.

4. I don’t have time to sit down and write.

5. I’m embarrassed about my poor grammar and spelling.

6. I don’t have the right tool, such as word processor or computer.

7. It’s been too long since I’ve written anything.

8. I’m not creative at all. That’s what you think.

9. No one will buy(or like) my writing anyway, so what’s the point.

10. Everything good’s been written already.

At the end of counting these ten (10) excuses none of this should stop us from
writing. As what Franklin D. Roosevelt claimed: “(T)here is nothing to fear, but fear
itself.”
To overcome those fears, these are the gentle reminders from many successful
writers to beginning writers:

1. I write to convey a message.

2. I write to tell stories.

3. I write to express my individuality.

4. I write to gain personal satisfaction.

5. I write to express emotions.

6. I write to gain knowledge.

7. I write to fulfil a dream.

8. I write to share information.

3
9. I write to become famous.

10. I write to earn a living.

To conclude, let’s embrace positivity to move forward on whatever writing

endeavour we are aiming.

Sensory in Writing Creative Works

Take a look at these two pictures and try to compare what is more appealing.

In creative writing, it is important to have sensory details because they add

power to writing. They give concrete description of a certain thing to create vivid
images that would appeal to the readers. Without visual/mental images the writing
would be plain and uninteresting to read.

What are these sensory details? Sensory details can make the reader see, hear,
touch, taste, and smell without doing it literally.

Sample Text of Sensory Details

” It was cold grey day in late November. The weather had changed overnight, when a
backing wind brought a granite sky and mizzling rain with it, and although it was now
only a little after two o’clock in the afternoon the pallor of a winter evening seemed to
have closed upon the hills, cloaking them in mist”.

An excerpt from Jamaica Inn, Daphne de Maurier

“She had pewter-colored hair set in a ruthless permanent, a hard beak, and large moist
eyes with the sympathetic expression of wet stones.”

Excerpt from The High Window, Raymond Chandler
