CIVE 514 HYDRAULIC STRUCTURES/SYSTEMS

Assignment 6
Due 2 December 2011
Note: This assignment is to be done by a team of two persons. When you turn in your report, provide a
signed copy of the honor pledge and a signed statement of the contribution to the assignment that was
made by each person on the team.

An embankment dam is in the process of being designed for water supply and hydropower
production. Your team has been assigned the responsibility of designing two optional emergency
spillway structures: (1) a gate-controlled (with radial gates) ogee crest spillway and stilling basin,
and (2) an uncontrolled shaft (morning glory) spillway. You are not required to design the energy
dissipation structure at the outlet of the shaft spillway conduit. Each of the optional facilities must
meet the following specifications:

1. Design flow rate, (QO)max = 800 m3/s,

2. Maximum available crest length for ogee spillway, (bc)max = 60 m,
3. Initial estimated elevation of the spillway crests is 825 m above m.s.l.,
4. Initial estimated elevation of the top of the dam is 835 m above m.s.l.,
5. Channel bed elevation at bottom of dam and in vicinity of shaft spillway conduit outlet =
775 m above m.s.l.,
6. Height of ogee spillway crest above the bed of the upstream approach channel, P = 4 m,
7. Number of gates on ogee spillway = 6,
8. Abutments of ogee spillway are embankment type,
9. Ogee spillway is a WES type with upstream slope of 3/1,
10. Ogee spillway outlet chute will be set at a slope of 25 to 35%,
11. Outlet conduit of the shaft spillway is 450 m long, with an outlet invert elevation of 767 m,
12. Effective fetch length over the upstream reservoir is 7 km, horizontal prevailing wind
velocity is 14 m/s, angle between the effective fetch and the prevailing wind direction is
20o, average depth of the reservoir upstream in the direction of the effective fetch length is
22 m, and
13. Flow depth in the river channel, forming the tailwater on the stilling basin and the shaft
spillway tunnel outlet, is estimated to vary according to the following data:
Q (m3/s)  h(m)
50 0.86
100 1.60
200 3.05
300 4.45
400 5.18
500 6.10
600 6.92
700 7.23
800 7.50
Provide a report of your engineering calculations and final recommended designs, including
professional drawings of plan and profile views for all elements of your designs. These elements
include the following for the controlled ogee spillway: spillway crest, the spillway channel, the
piers and mountings for the gates, the stilling basin, and the transition from the stilling basin to the
stream channel. For the shaft spillway include drawings for the spillway, the vertical shaft, the
bendway into the tunnel, and the outlet tunnel. As part of your design report, present and discuss
the advantages and disadvantages of each alternative design. State all of your assumptions and
show all of your work.
