Dear Governor DeSantis:
Effective Friday, April 1, 2022, at 5:00 PM, I hereby resign as the duly elected County Commissioner for District
2 of the Brevard County Board of County Commissioners.
When I ran for and took office roughly 3-1/2 years ago, I did so with the intention of treating the position as a
full-time job. I have never missed a single County Commission meeting, never been late to one, and never left
one early. To allow for this, I vastly scaled back my law practice upon being elected.
During the time I have been in office, with the assistance of outstanding staff, I am proud to have resolved
longstanding issues impacting my constituents. From securing a fire automatic aid agreement with Patrick Space
Force Base to vastly improve response times and insurance rates for many of my constituents to having secured
and allocated full funding to replace an unsafe bridge allowing for reduced evacuation time and restoration of
access to a vital corridor in the heart of my district, there have been successes both big and small. I am proud
to have successfully sponsored agenda items, including an animal abuse registry, which make Brevard County
a better place to live.
In conjunction with receiving state grants for septic-to-sewer projects, my district successfully lobbied to
allocate many millions of dollars of ARPA funds toward water quality and infrastructure projects to replace aging
sewer infrastructure (lift stations and force main), some of which has been in place for far longer than its
designed service life. This better ensures those placed on sewer have a reliable system less prone to leakage
or rupture, assuring the benefits of conversion. My office also quelled efforts to irreversibly butcher dozens of
100+ year old oak trees along Rockledge Drive, an area designated as a scenic drive by the legislature in 1965.
Every year, my office has run substantially under budget and returned money to the general fund, more so
than any of my colleagues. Thanks in part to my office’s good relations with the Merritt Island Redevelopment
Authority and its willingness to help, more businesses, within my district, received more financial assistance
from CARES Act funds than did those in any other district.
While serving my roughly 125,000 constituents (including approximately 85,000 registered voters) has been
a privilege, this afternoon, I lost a relative with whom I was very close, and I must take time to be with my family
as we grieve. For at least the next several weeks, this precludes my ability to continue serving full-time as a
County Commissioner.
As little of my term remains, I would ask that you please consider appointing a replacement to the office I am
vacating. There are several highly qualified individuals; I would be happy to provide recommendations or to
assist in any way I may be of help.
