1) What were the major communication problems faced in this case? Were Shantanu’s
expectations his team were very high, or it was quite genuine. 

a) Major Communication issues faced in this case study were: -


 Managers didn’t deliver on the promises about the job to Shantanu.
 Miscommunication regarding hiring in other departments or organizations
 Lack of written communication.
 Lack of transparency regarding permanent hiring position.

b) Shantanu’s Expectation from his team weren’t completely wrong or far-fetched.


As he was a perfectionist and was appreciated by all his managers and most of
his peers, he could expect a permanent job position. The managers also seem
quite supportive of the permanent position hence the external validation
boosted his expectations from his team.

2) Do you think there was lack of transparency? 

 Yes there was lack of transparency regarding the permanent hiring position in the company.
It was not specified whether the interview was a formality or not as well as other details
regarding the job description and the jury panel’s decision being the final verdict was not
specified at all.
 Alon with that, the company’s policies regarding accepting job positions inside and outside
the company were not clearly specified and no distinct plan or process was specified if in
case of the same.
3) What would Shantanu have done to overcome the situation? 

 Shantanu could have asked for some written form of communication or proof for the hiring
situation.
 Shantanu could have spoken to HR of the company to understand all his options as well as
understand the company policy thoroughly for the same instance.

4) In what better way Ravi could have handled the situation? 

 Ravi should have spoken to HR regarding the vacancy /hiring position for Shantanu in
advance to avoid costing any lost opportunity to Shantanu.
 Ravi could have maintained transparency regarding the interview process.

5) What were the conflicting statements said by Ravi in this case? How could he have sorted
it?  
 Ravi could have asked Shantanu to talk to HR about the interview process as well as the
other job offering to take a clear and sound decision.
 Ravi could also have spoken to HR regarding the same job hiring and given Shantanu another
chance in some way possible.
 Ravi could have avoided saying “Interview is just a formality” and could have given Shantanu
a clear picture regarding the jury’s decision and selection criterion.

6) How HR within an organization can play an important role in tracking miscommunication


and resolve such issues?
 HR could provide a strong framework as well as a strong sense of trust so that any level of
dispute or problems occurred due to miscommunications could be resolved at the earliest
possible.
 With a strong sense of Trust level established employees can bring any issue forward
without any hindrance and fear which will lead up to identification and resolution of the
problem.
 HR could provide a layer of transparency with the company policies as well as the induvial
or group / team issues.
