CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
A lesbian woman is one who is romantically, sexually and/or emotionally attracted to
women. Many lesbians prefer to be called lesbian rather than gay. A gay man is one who is
romantically, sexually and/or emotionally attracted to men. The word gay can be used to
refer generally to lesbian, gay and bisexual people but many women prefer to be called
lesbian. Most gay people don’t like to be referred to as homosexual because of the negative
historical associations with the word and because the word gay better reflects their identity.
Lesbian and gay people are more likely to experience, discrimination, harassment,
and bullying, than those that identify themselves as heterosexual. Some of the factors that
may reinforce homophobia on a larger scale are moral, religious, and political beliefs of a
dominant group.
Discrimination, harassment, and bullying of the lesbian and Gay are very rampant
nowadays. Where many people belong the lesbian and gay can’t live freedom because of the
discrimination, harassment, and bullying of other people of them .Also they can’t fully
access their right as a citizen because of discrimination, harassment, and bullying of other
people of them.
Gender equality of the lesbian and gay means to enjoy the same rights, resources,
opportunities and protections. It also means that lesbian and gay have “… agency to use

those rights, capabilities, resources and opportunities to make strategic choices and
decisions” about the course of their lives “without the fear of coercion and violence.”Gender
equality does not require that girls and boys, or women and men, be the same but also the
lesbian and gay, or that they be treated exactly alike, but rather implies an absence of bias or
discrimination. Equality between lesbian and gay is both a human rights issue and a
precondition for, and indicator of, sustainable, people-centred development.(NICOLA
WOOD,2013)
According to Gill Valentine Discrimination is to show favour, prejudice or bias for
or against a person on any arbitrary grounds, for example on the basis of race, gender, sex,
pregnancy, marital status, family responsibility, ethnic or social origin, colour, sexual
orientation, age disability, religion, HIV status, conscience, belief, political opinion, culture,
language and birth by an employee
Bullying is a complex phenomenon, for which a systems ecological framework is
most appropriate, whereby the dynamics of bullying are understood as extending beyond the
children or youth who are victimized or who bully. The attitudes of parents, teachers and
school administrators may contribute to children's victimization, as may teacher and student
tolerance of victimization (Twemlow et al., 2003).
Harassment is behavior, verbal or physical, that unreasonably interferes with work or
creates an intimidating, hostile, or offensive work environment. It can take many different
forms, including intimidation or sexual harassment.

Intimidation includes physical or verbal abuse; behavior directed at isolating or
humiliating an individual or a group, or at preventing them from engaging in normal
activities. Behaviors that might constitute intimidation.
Sexual harassment is any behavior of a sexual nature that is unwelcome, offensive,
or embarrassing to the individuals exposed to the behavior, or that creates a hostile or
intimidating work environment. Sexual harassment includes sexual assault, unsolicited
requests for sexual favors, requests for sexual favors linked to implied threats or promises
about career prospects, unwanted physical contact, visual displays of degrading sexual
images, sexually suggestive conduct, or offensive remarks of a sexual nature. Sexual
harassment may occur between persons of opposite sexes or of the same sex. While typically
it involves a pattern of behavior, it can take the form of a single incident; and it may be
directed toward a group or toward a particular person.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
1.How was your life being a member of a lesbian and gay ?
2. How important for you to be respect by other?
3. What is the worst discrimination , bullying and harassment that you encountered
in life?
SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY:
This study is focusing the impact of discrimination among lesbian & gay member at
municipality of Magallanes and Cabadbaran City Agusan Del Norte. The purpose of the
study is to determine the impact of discrimination among lesbian and gay in school, society,
and relationship with their parents. And this study will be conducting the S.Y. 2018-2019.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The finding of the study will be significance to the area of experiences of every individual.
This will also bring benefits to the following:
Family: This study will help the family to understand the lesbian, and accept their situation
without any hesitation.
Teacher: This will help the teacher to promote gender equality inside the school premises.
Society: This study will give them knowledge to promote gender equality among lesbian
and gay and continued upholding the right of every individual.
Lesbian and Gay members: This will give them insight to continue their lives as a human
being. To let them escape from their cages.
Future Researcher: To give them knowledge about this research and give them more
information to strongly promote gender equality.

CHAPTER II
REVIEW RELATED LITERATURE:
Lesbian and Gay has become a widely accepted designation for minorities based on
sexual and gender orientation. All members of these subgroups are subject to similar
prejudices rooted in beliefs and traditions about sexuality and gender. Lesbian and Gay
people, as members of a social minority group, are suffering from various forms of
socioeconomic and cultural injustice. The lacks of social recognition has an effect on the
capacity of Lesbian and Gay people to fully access and enjoy their rights as citizens. They
are more likely to experience discrimination, harassment, and bullying due to their sexual
orientation, than those that identify themselves as heterosexual. Highlighting some major
problems faced by Lesbian and Gay people across the world is the theme of this article
(Chatterjee Subhrajit 2014)
Lesbian,and gay individuals of color experience multiple forms of oppression.
Negative societal reactions, limited economic resources, racial prejudice, and limited
acceptance within their own cultural community. This article reviews the literature on this
population, which includes background information and empirical research. Research on this
population is scarce and often ignores factors that promote resiliency and well being.

Another recent study assessed the relationship between family rejection in
adolescence and the health of Lesbian and Gay young adults (Ryan, Huebner, Diaz, &
Sanchez, 2009). That study showed clear associations between parental rejecting behaviors
during adolescence and the use of illegal drugs, depression, attempted suicide, and sexual
health risk by Lesbian and gay young adults.
Nazim Mahmood commit suicide because his parent couldn’t accept that he was gay.
The life Nazim enjoyed seemed a world away from the working-class traditional Muslim
community in which he had been raised. His Family didn’t know that he is gay. Until he
meet Matthew Ogston in gay nightclub in Birmingham, Something about Nazim’s shy
demeanour appealed to Matthew. They started talking. “There was an instant connection,”.
Until his family discovered that he had a relationship between matthew. And his mother is
very disappointed on Him and that’s the reason he commit suicide because of rejection from
His family. Sarfraz manzoor(2014)
Students are often targeted for bullying and harassment in school because they are
presumed to be lesbian,and Gay. A study found that 84% of Lesbian and Gay experienced
some form of harassment at school (Kosciw, 2004). Research also shows that for every
Lesbian and Gay who reported being harassed at school, four heterosexual youth reported
harassment for being perceived as gay or lesbian (Reis, 2006).
Economist, sociologists, and other social scientists have begun to study the influence
of sexual orientation on individuals in the labor market, particularly with respect to
employment discrimination. The conceptual framework developed in this paper connects

lesbian, gay, and bixexual workers' disclosure of their sexual orientation to the economic
and social characteristics of the workplace. Disclosure creates the potential for
discrimination by employers and coworkers. The framework shows how sexual orientation
operates independently and in interaction with other important characteristics such as race
and gender. A review of existing research supports the hypothesis that discrimination against
gay workers exists. Both workplace groups for gays and lesbians and those who work gay
and lesbian workers (such as supervisors, personnel managers, and counselors) need to
understand the relationship between disclosure and discrimination in order to make
workplaces supportive of lesbian, gay, and bisexual workers. M.V. Lee Badgett PhD 2008
This article is a metanalysis of studies on the prevalence of mental disorders in
lesbians and gay. The author suggests that prejudice, stigma, and discrimination, creates a
hostile and stressful social environment that causes mental health problems. The author
depicts a conceptual model of this process based on a review of the literature. The
conceptual framework is derived from the idea that higher prevalence rates of mental health
problems are caused by excess stress related to stigma and prejudice of sexual orientation.

Research from FAP shows that family rejection has serious impact on lesbian and
gay young people’s health and mental health. Lesbian and gay people who were rejection by
their family because of their identity have much lower self-esteen and have fewer people

We know relatively little about lives and experience of gay,and lesbian,who live in
rural areas,with early research tending focus on the challenge of rural living.The present
survey research examined the experience and belief of gays and living in Wyoming. Finding
highlight the interaction across personal,familial community and sociental level. Difference
based om gender and community size were found for the respondent’s experience with
discrimination and their interest in the pursuit of “gay right” of special interest is the
importance ascribed to the geographical community and paucity of community-based

Lesbian and Gay people are more subject to discrimination and harassment than the
rest of the population. Research, both in Norway and abroad, shows lesbian and Gay people
to be heavily overrepresented in some group of persons with substance abuse and mental
disorder. Many attempt suicide.There is unfortunately a correslation between the lack of
acceptance for different sexual orientations and form of sexual expression and prevalence of
mental disorder and substance on attitudes at all levels,and knowledge development is taking
place in the various services. In order to achieve these ambitions,research,sound
methodology and practical experience in the lesbian and gay area must be documented,
systematized and made available(Anniken Huitfeldt,2008)
Lesbian and Gay people face widespread discrimination and exclusion in all context.

or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity, or that of their parents. Lesbian and Gay
rejected by their families experience disproportionate levels of suicide, homelessness and
food insecurity. (Fraud,2008).
All people have an equal right to live free from harassment, bullying, and
discrimination International Human Rights law stablishes legal obligations on states to
ensure that every person,without distinction, can enjoy these rights. While welcoming
increasing efforts in many countries to protect the rights of lesbian and gay people, we
remain seriously concerned that around the world. States should uphold international human
rights standards on non-discrimination, including by Prohibiting discrimination against
lesbian and gay adults, adolescent and children in all context-including in education,
employment, healthcare, housing ,social protection. Ensuring that lesbian and gay people are
consulted and participate in the design, implementation and monitoring of laws ,policies and
programmes that affect them, including development and humanitarian initiatives.(UNAIDS
2015)
In 28 states, employment can be terminated if you publicly identify as lesbian and
gay. Developing organizational policies that ban this type of discrimination deters negative
behavior and encourages an open and inclusive workplace climate. On February 26, 2018,
the Manassas park city School Board added Lesbian and Gay to their general Discrimination
policy. Protective policies in schools allow student and staff to feel comfortable expressing
their individual identity and provide assurance that they’ll have a safe learning environment.
Moreover, involving the organization in the process of developing anti-discrimination

policies creates deeper understanding and ownership (Dr. Kelly Meier; Updated June
27,2018)
Teachers can provide leadership within schools by recognizing, supporting and
affirming lesbian and gay students and by challenging homophobic bullying and behavior.
The TUI, ASTI and GLEN consider the role teacher can play in supporting lesbian and gay
student to be very important, particularly in light of research that reveals: All schools are
prohibited from discriminating on nine grounds, including sexual orientation. Harassment
and sexual are also prohibited.Moreover schools are legally responsible for harassment or
discrimination experienced by student unless they take reasonable steps to prevent it
(Pauline Daniels 2018).
San Francisco,CA- For the first time, researchers have established a clear link
between accepting family attitudes and behaviors towards their lesbian and gay children and
significantly decreased risk and better overall health in adulthood. The study shows that
specific parental and caregiver behaviors—such as advocating for their children when they
are mistreated because of their lesbian and gay identity or supporting their gender expression
—protect against depression , substance abuse, suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts in
early adulthood. In addition, lesbian and gay people with highly accepting families have
significantly higher levels of self-esteem and social support in young adulthood.(Cathy

Human Rights Article 13&14. “ Everyone has the right to freedom of movement and
residence within the borders of each state” and “Everyone has the right to seek and to enjoy
in other countries asylum from persecution” Homosexual acts are outlawed in over 85
countries and territories ,which increases the need of lesbian and gay persons to seek refuge.
This may be the last resort for someone living under the constant threat of being exposed,
excluded, imprisoned or executed. Likewise, in many countries same-sex relationships are
not legally recognized, which may also be a reason for migration.
Substance abuse problems are widespread within the Lesbian and Gay. It is
important in treating these individuals to not make preconceived assumptions that the
substance use disorder is a result of their sexuality or that violence or abuses has occurred. It
is crucial for workers to be knowledgeable about the unique issues these individuals face, as
well as treatment options, resources, and supportive organizations specific to the lesbian and

The Equality Act 2010 protect lesbian and gay people from direct discrimination,
indirect discrimination, harassment and victimasation at work. It applies to anyone who is
perceived to be lesbian, and gay people. However, there are some instances, specifically
regarding ‘occupational requirement’, where exemptions may apply, although these are
limited. All employers have to adhere to the Equality Act, regardless of the number of staff
they employ or the amount of money they make. Staff are protected throughout the

application and interview process, as well as throughout the term of their employment,
including any probation or notice period.
That is why diversity and gender equality are important focal points in NIMD’s
work. Through our programmes we aim to contribute to the active participation of all groups
in society and the equal distribution of power and influence between women and men,
regardless of their age, gender, religion, sexual orientation or ethnic background. Heleen

We need to be humane to this community and not condemn them as nature’s
aberrations. After all, they are God’s creatures and have the right to live their lives as they
choose within accepted norms and values. As long as they keep their public image and
mannerisms within the bounds of accepted propriety and decorum, they should neither be
harassed nor discriminated against. Society needs to be tolerant of their physiological and

Synthesis of the Review: The background of the study provides the researcher with

gay how their life being discriminate, harass and bullied by other people.

CHAPTER III
METHODOLOGY
This chapter presents the research design, informants of the study, research
instrument, data gathering procedure and the data analysis of the study.
RESEARCH DESIGN
Phenomenology is both a philosophy and a family of research methods concerned
with exploring and understanding human experience (Langdridge, 2007). Researchers using
phenomelogical methods aim to uncover the meaning of an individual’s experience of a
specified phenomenon through focusing on a concrete experiential account grounded in
everyday life (Langdridge, 2007). Phenomenology describes the meaning of experiences
lived by several individual and seeks to understand the essence of those experiences (Hatch,
2002).

A descriptive phenomelogical research by Giorgi, A. (2003). This type of method
focused on the meaning of the lived experiences for several individuals about a concept of
phenomenon and exploring structures of consciousness in human experiences. The
descripted phenomenological method gave the lived context of the participant and focuses
on the perspective of the participant without the use of deception (Giorgi, 2009). One
important aspect of this approach is the way by which it distinguishes itself from those
strictly interpretive approaches.
The informant should meet the following criteria:
 He/she must experience being discriminate, harass, and bullied.
 He/she must be 18 years old above.
 He/she must have a job.
 He/she must be student.

and Bullying whether in their own respective house hold were observe during the study.

INFORMANT OF THE STUDY
The respondent of the study are the (8) eight lesbian and gay (1) one gay working on
beauty salon, (1) one gay unemployed, (1) one gay studying at Father Urios Academy of
Magallanes Incorporated (1) gay having a relationship (1) one lesbian studying at
Magallanes National High School, (1) one lesbian in relationship, (1) one
lesbian.unemployed (1) lesbian working at P.S.P.I.
RESEARCH INSTRUMENT
The researchers use face to face interview, audio record, and video record to record to
the exact response of our respondent.
DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE
Before conducting an interview, we use random sampling technique in finding the
appropriate respondent for our study. Next the researchers send a letter of request sign by
the Principal and also by the Participant to ask permission to interview them. Upon
Approval the researchers conducted face-to-face interview, Captures some pictures and
audio recording. The Researchers conduct house-to-house interview, Moreover, promised
the informant to keep their answer Confidential.

DATA ANALYSIS
Coding text and theorizing: The researcher utilize the phenomenological research
methodology of Goirgi (2003). It serve as the founding in the analysis of the derived from
the information utilizing his steps in analyzing the data. The verbatim data of the
information were read thoroughly by the researchers to be submerged with the information
feelings. Significant meaning units were extracted from the incidents relevant to originally
gathered data. In addition, concept were constructed from the psychological meaning units
and were arranged into categories which then had been developed into themes. The result
were incorporated into a rich and exhaustive of the information experience of lesbian and
gay establishment
Memoing and Theorizing: Memoing is when the running notes of each of the
concept that are being identified are kept. It is the intermediate step between the coding and
the first draft of the completed analysis. Memos are field note about the concept in which
one lays out their observation and insight. Memoing starts with the first concept that has
been identified and continues right through the process of breaking the text and of building
theories
Integrating refining and writing up theories: Once coding categories emerges, the
next step is to link them together into theoretical models around a central category that hold
everything together. The constant comparative methods comes into play, along with
negative case analysis which looks for cases that do not confirm the model. Basically one

generates a model about how whatever one is studying right from the first interview and see
if the model holds up as one analyze more interview.

RESULT AND DISCUSSION
The researcher utilized the phenomenological research methodology of Giorgi
(2003). It served as the foundation in the analysis of the data derived from the in the analysis

Coding text and Theorizing: This step involves synthesizing the insight within the
meaning unit into a consistent description of a structure of the incidents so that a situated or
specific description will be written. Below table 2 presents the sample concepts, categories,
and theories (see Appendix f).

human that we need to respect them and also give some importance because they also have a
feeling they can feel what we feel too. Also we are God’s children we should not judge
people by their own identity because God treated us equal that’s why we should be like God
we should treat them equal without any circumstances.

CHAPETER V
SUMMARY, CONCLUSION, AND RECOMMENDATION
This chapter present the summary, findings, and conclusion of the study.
Recommendation are also offered in the light of the findings and conclusion of the study.
Summary
This study strive to know the discrimination, harassment, and the life
experiences of the lesbian and gay in our society. It show how people response and treat
them.
This study used the Phenomenology method. The respondent were the fellow lesbian
and gay of the Municipality of Magallanes and Cabadbaran City Agusan Del Norte who
experienced discrimination, bullying, and harassment in their life. Interview guide with
grand tour Question were used as the main tool in gathering data. Technique such as coding
text and theorizing were also used.
Conclusion
Based from the involving theories the following conclusion are drawn:

1. The informant want to live free from discrimination, bullying, and harassment.
They want to be accepted society and family to enjoy their life of being who they are.
2. The informant received discrimination, bullying, and harassment from other
people who surround them.
3. The informant were aware that they are being discriminate, harass, and bullied by
others.
4. The informant encountered challenges encountered challenges on how to survive
since they are being discriminate, bullied, and harass by others.
Recommendations
On the basis of findings and conclusion, the following recommendation are
offered;
1. There should be have a protection and Equality for lesbian, and gay people.
2. The Gender Equality law should be implement more to give protection to those
lesbian and gay.
3. The Government should provide a seminar that would enlighten the people
mindset about the lesbian and gay so they would respect and treated normal.

Global Theory: To protect and widely accept all lesbian and gay. This global
theory was formulated based from theory one: Gender Equality of lesbian and gay. This
theory was articulated from two category: Flaunt and acceptance. Some of the informant
showed that they express their feelings towards other people and they were accepted by
others.
The speaker experience being discriminate, harass, and bullied due to their gender.
Therefore base in the raw data the informants wanted to be respected and treated equal all
the lesbian and gay.

Negative societal reactions, limited economic resources, racial prejudice, and limited
acceptance within their own cultural community. This article reviews the literature on this
population, which includes background information and empirical research. Research on this
population is scarce and often ignores factors that promote resiliency and well being.
Since the Discrimination, Bullying, and Harassment are the hindrance experience by
lesbian and gay. In the result show that is necessary to treat equal to avert these hindrance,
