Learning Objectives: At the end of this topic, the student will be able to:
 identify their role in the household work-that it is a joint responsibility of all the
members.
 identify and give examples of food obtained from plants and animals.
 observe and draw edible parts of some of the plants.
 list some commonly available medicinal plants.

1. Roles and Responsibilities of Family Members

Household work is a joint responsibility of all the members in the family. It is


important for all members in the family to share responsibilities in the family.
This is because
 We learn to share and care for each other.
 It makes us feel responsible for each other and gives us a sense of
togetherness.
 One person in the family does not get over burdened.

2. Source of Food
We get all food from Plants and Animals.

3. Edible Parts of a Plant

We get food from different parts of plants. So, we eat the different
parts of a plant like:-

 Roots
 Flowers
 Leaves
 Fruits
 Seeds

We also use oil seeds from plants like sunflower,
mustard, cotton, rice, soybean to extract oil

4. Medicinal Plants

Forests are a storehouse of medicinal plants. Some common plants or plant


parts that we use in our homes for their medicinal values are:
 get hurt- we take milk with turmeric/apply
turmeric paste

 have a stomachache -we take ajwain/mint extract

 Have a cough or cold- we take ginger and tulsi extract mixed with honey

 have a toothache- we use clove oil
