SCIENCE

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: At the end of this module, you are expected to:
a. Relate how science and technology affect one’s belief, practices and ways of thinking;
b. Describe the significant contributions of great men and women in science and technology; and
c. Recognize the importance of science in our lives.

SUBJECT MATTER:
a. Specific Topics: Science, Technology and Society, Branches of Science, Laboratory Tools and safety
Measures.
b. Learning Competency: Recognize the importance of science in our lives.

LESSON PROPER:

A. INTRODUCTORY PART

As time progresses, the world is changing at an increasing rate. Before, people had only their senses to rely
on for their observations. But now, we have complex equipment to observe the world. These are the works of a
scientist. If you are given a chance, do you want also to become a scientist? Why or why not? Place your
answer in the space provided below.

B. DISCUSSION

LESSON 1: INTRODUCTION TO SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

Lesson 1.1: Science and Technology and Society:

Science and Technology makes obtaining of information faster and easier. We have vehicles to ride on
for us to go a distant place. In simple words, science and technology makes the works of people lighter. For
further information about science and technology, read page 6 to 12.

Activity 1: Science, Technology and Society

Objectives: At the end of the activity, you should be able to:

a. Differentiate science from technology; and
b. Discuss the branches of science.

A. Science and Technology

Direction: Write the definition of SCIENCE and TECHNOLOGY in the space provided after the words
below.

SCIENCE =

TECHNOLOGY =

B. Branches of Science
Direction: Write the definition of each branch of science in the right column of the table below.

Branch of Science Definition

Example: Biology The study of living things
1. Physics
2. Chemistry

3. Earth Science

Lesson 1.2: Laboratory Tools and safety Measures:

Professional workers have their own toolboxes. These contain devices and equipment. For scientists,
they also have theirs which help obtain information (read page 20 to 24). Inside the laboratory, it is very
important to follow safety procedures to prevent accident (read page 24 to 27) to know these.

Activity4: Laboratory Tools and Safety Measures

Objective: At the end of the activity, you should be able to:

a. Identify the different laboratory tools; and
b. Practice safety rules in the use of the laboratory.

A. “Identify Me!”

Direction: Identify what laboratory tool each number is describing. Choose your answer inside the box below
and then write it on the line before each number.

Evaporating Dish
Tong
Thermometer
Beaker
Bunsen Burner

_____________1. An open glass cylinder with a pouring lip used as a standard laboratory container.
_____________2. Used to take temperature of solids, liquids and gases. They are usually in Celsius.
_____________3. Equipment used to hold different objects such as test tubes, when they are hot.
_____________4. A small laboratory equipment connected to a gas source producing a very hot flame from a
mixture of gas and air with adjustable holes.
_____________5. Used to heat and evaporate liquids.

GENERALIZATION/VALUES INTEGRATION:

Science and Technology give us a comfortable world to live in. Almost everything is science-
based. In return, we should give everything an importance because all of those were the innovative
works of great men and women of science. We should pay respect to all the scientists who made this
living better possible. We should respect everyone not only for those who significantly contributes to the
field of science.
