1 a) Interior wall temperature is 1000K and outside temperature is 350K, the wall thickness is 0.6m,1m 1
wide 1.5m height if the K=0.4W/mK then thermal resistance will be___
(a)1K/W (b) 2K/W (c) 1.8K/W (d) 0K/W
b) Why radiation contribution is less in a multi-mode heat transfer at low temperature? 1
c) How thermal conductivity varies with rise in temperature for fluids? 1
d) Define thermal diffusivity of material. 1
Q. No Part-B Marks
2 Heat Transfer through a composite wall. Consider the composite wall shown below that is made out 6
of layered materials, with conductivities and thickness given in the table below and air temperature
and convective heat transfer coefficients given in the figure. The wall has an area of 15 m2 and a
height of 4 m. The third layer is made of two different components: 3a occupies 8 m2 and 3b
occupies 7 m2.
(a) Calculate the heat transfer rate across the wall.
(b) Determine the temperature at the interface between materials 4 and 5.
(c) If the thickness of one layer could be increased by 50%, which layer do you recommend to
provide the greatest reduction of heat loss through the wall? Justify your reasoning without the aid
of calculations.
Refer fig 1 and table 1.
3. A plane wall 'X' (k=75 W/m°C), 60 mm thick and has volumetric heat generation of 1.5*106 W/m3. 5
It is insulated on one side while the other side is in contact with surface of another wall 'Y' (k = 150
W/m°C) which is 30 mm thick and has no heat generation. The non-contact surface of wall Y is
exposed to a cooling fluid at 20 °C. If the convective heat transfer coefficient between wall Y and
fluid 950W /m2°C. Find the temperature at the insulated surface and temperature at the cooled
surface of composite wall.
