OBTAIN MEASUREMENTS
Background Information for Learners
Body measurements deal with the measurement of body parts. It involves measuring the
dimension of the body width, length and girth and other specific areas on the body.
For sewing garments, it requires you to determine the accurate body measurements for
obtaining best result in pattern drafting and making sure that the finished product fits properly.
Moreover, it is essential to know the basic body measurements - those measurements that cover
specific parts of the body such as hips, waist, bust, length etc. and how they can be properly
obtained. Hence, body measurements should be taken with great care and honesty.

Activity 4: THINK AND ANSWER
Let’s do simple calculation!
Example:
You need to buy 72 inches length of fabric to be used in making a blouse for your sister. You
have known that the cost of the fabric you will be using is P3.00 per centimeter. How much
will you need to buy it?
Note: 1 inch= 2.54 centimeters
Solution:
Step 1: Convert the 72 inches length of fabric into centimeters.
72 inches
x 2.54 cm
182.88 cm
Step 2: Multiply the cost per centimeter to the length of fabric converted.
182.88cm
x Php 3.00
Php 548.64

Let’s try this!

A. Directions: Read and analyze the following situation carefully and calculate what is being
asked.

1. The fabric you need to make 3 pieces of Pajama measures 108 inches. The cost of the
fabric is P5.00 per centimeter. How much will you need to buy the fabric?

2. Your group were asked to make 100 pcs of face mask for the front liners. It was
equally divided into 4. You need 100cm of fabric to accomplish your part. How much
will you need if the cost of the fabric is P15.00 per inches?

B. Directions: Complete the table below by calculating the total cost.

QUANTITY UNIT DESCRIPTION OF UNIT TOTAL

MATERIALS COST COST
8 yards Polyester Cotton (50” Width) Php 35.00
1 spool Red Thread Php 20.00
1 spool White thread Php 20.00

Obtain measurements
Background Information for Learners

Dressmaking is defined as the craft of sewing clothes and dresses. An example of

dressmaking is the art of sewing a beautiful dress from fabric. Dressmakers help people
enhance their body assets and hide their flaws. Just like makeup, clothes are the basic things
that can help in enhancing whatever asset a person has and be able to hide whatever flaws that
person wants to keep private.
Taking correct measurements is one of the most important steps in making a custom-
made dress. When the body measurements are accurate, the garments can be fit. A well-fitted
garment can enhance not only the look of the person but also the personality.
In planning a project, it is important to estimate the quantity of materials to be used and
the cost involved. Doing estimates will help you to make the right decisions so that there won‘t
be any effort, money and time wasted.

PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN AND THE COLOR HARMONIES
Background Information for Learners

The principles of designs are concepts used to organize or arrange the structural
elements of design. These the ways in which these principles are applied the affects the
expressive content, or the message of the work.
The first thing you usually notice about clothes or anything is their color. Before you
start studying which colors look best together, you should learn the meaning of color terms and
the rules that apply to colors. The beauty of any color scheme depends upon how well the colors
harmonize. To harmonize, colors must appear to belong together.

CLEAN AND LUBRICATE MACHINE
Background Information for Learners

A well-made sewing machine traditional or serge, new or old, used often or only
occasionally will sew perfectly for many years if it is given proper care. It may need to be
adjusted or a part may need to be replaced, but a sewing machine that is given proper
maintenance and cleaned regularly seldom actually “wears out.”
Sewing machines generally require basic maintenance of cleaning, oiling, and
lubricating. These procedures are covered in the use and care booklet that comes with the
machine. It is the best reference for the specific care required by your machine. Some machines
are designed to be oil- and lubricant-free, so follow the directions in your booklet carefully.
A sewing machine is an investment. Whether you use it every day or every once in a
while, it’s important to take good care of your machine. Performing routine maintenance tasks
and keeping your machine clean can add years of life to your sewing machine
