Introduction To Manipur

The word Manipur literally means a ‘Jeweled Town’

– a name that rightly justifies the small and
picturesque land

Manipur is a state in northeastern India

It is bounded by the Indian state of Nagaland to the

north, Mizoram to the south and Assam to the West

It also borders two regions of Mynmar, Sangaing

reagion to the east and Chin state to the south.
Minerals
Minerals in the Manipur are mainly confined to certain typesof rocks such as
ophiolite suite. Oceanic pelagic sediment (OPS) and melanges in the ophiolite
belt. Amongst these, Chromite, Limestone and Serpentinites (As Dimensional
Stone) are important for immediate exploitation. Other minerals are Platinum
group elements/ Platinum group members (PGE/PGM), Idocrase, Rock
Salt, Etc.
Chromite Deposits

The Chromite Deposits of Manipur Fall in the

third category of Indian chromite associated
with the tertiary ophiolite formation. The GSI
and the state geology and mining division
have recorded a number of chromite
occurance of metallurgical and refractory
grades. From the ophiolite belt in Manipur in
Ukhrul and Chandel distric boardering
Myanmar. Chromite occurs as flotes on the
surface and in-situ pods of varying
dimensions. These Chromite are found as
massive builders, blocks, tabular bodies as well
as nodular masses within the altered
ultramafics.
Limestone Deposits
Cements and grades of Limestone are
found in the lensoidal bodies of Malanges
in the west andin the Oceanic Pelagic
Sediment(OPS) in the east of ophiolite
belt of Manipur in Ukhrul and Chandel
district. Limestone are mainly massive
with few fissile at the periphery. These
limestone are also be used in lime
burning industries. The important
limestone deposits are mainly reported
from three linear melange band in the
west of ophiolite belt in Disang
sediments. There are more than 85
small limestone deposits in the ophiolite
belt of Manipur.
Serpentinites
Serpentinites occur extremely in Chandel and Ukhrul
district within the ophiolite belt of Manipur
extending over an area of 1100sq.Km. The belt
trends Northeast-Southwest from south of Koren
in Chandel district to Northeast of Tushom in
Ukhrul distric upto Nagaland boarders and
technically overlies.the Disang sediments on its
West. Serpentinites are also commercially known as
‘Green Marble’. It, like granite and marble, can be
processed into monuments. Tiles, slabs, and other
buildings blocks. It is considered that serpentinite of
Manipur has a huge market potential, both as
finished product and raw forms, both within India
and outside. So far Manipur is considered, it could
become the most important mineral industry
generating large scale employment and appreciable
export earnings.
PGE/PGM And it’s associated Sulphide

The Arakan –Chin belt extending between the Andaman Islands

and the North-east India corresponding to a Trench-Arc up-
thrust of the middle Cenozoic, occurance of Chromite, Nickel,
PGM and Copper Sulphide have been found along. This
ophiolite belt Myanmar and it is highly probable that the
same mineralisation a can be found in the Manipur section of
the belt. The GSI has also reported presence of some
PGE/PGM in some Chromite and Serpentinite samples from
Maatha, Chandel, district and Phangrai(Ukhrul district) high
concentration of Nickel(upto 74000 PPM) in the soil above
the ultramafics was indicated by the GSI in the area of
Gannon to Ninghati, Ukhrul district, Manipur. The geochemical
prospecting also indicated the increase in Nickle concentration
near the soil-rock contact. Two Sulphide mineralisation were
also located at Nampisha and Yentem ophiolite suites by the
DGM. The state DGM(Directorate of Geology and Mining) had
initiated action to keep up the explanation at some selected
blocks in technical collaboration with the GSI.
