Skip to Content. There's considerable discussion of police procedures, including how suspect sketches are created and surveillance techniques.
The action is set partly in Manhattan's "Museum Mile," so there's information about some of the art found in different New York museums, as well
as mentions a few artists, including Picasso and Monet, and descriptions of a couple of their pieces.
At the end of the book, there's a two-page, step-by-step "How to Draw Faces" art lesson by "Eddie Red. More can be accomplished through
teamwork than by working alone. It's gratifying to discover a special skill and then use it for a good cause. Don't be afraid to ask for help from
adults. Attaining big goals often involves both perseverance and personal sacrifice. Eddie is doggedly determined to solve the mystery at the center
of the book and goes to great lengths to gather clues, using mostly his ingenuity and great powers of observation.
Though he often gets frustrated by the behavior of Eddie Red Undercover: Mystery on Museum Mile adults, or their unwillingness to listen to his
ideas, he's unfailingly polite to those around him. On the negative side, he doesn't always follow the suggestions of his superiors, which often leads
to trouble. The book begins with an episode in which our hero, Edmund, sees a man running out of an alley carrying a bloody knife after a scuffle
of some sort.
Later, Eddie is threatened, duct-taped to a drainpipe, and held at gunpoint by a criminal. In the same episode, a detective is shot near Eddie, who
applies pressure to the bloody wound. Earlier, Eddie kicks the detective in the groin as part of his self-defense class but that's mainly played for
laughs. Parents and caregivers: Set limits for violence and more with Plus. Parents need to Eddie Red Undercover: Mystery on Museum Mile that
Eddie Red Undercover: Mystery on Museum Mile is a taut, often funny mystery about an African-American sixth grader who becomes embroiled
in a complex case involving art thieves.
There's some violence, including one graphic shooting and Eddie being duct-taped to a drainpipe by a criminal, but it's a small part of the story.
The book does not talk down to its target audience; in fact, it includes a fair amount of complicated vocabulary, unexplained mentions of ADHD
and OCD and the slang "meds," as well as discussions of artists and New York museums. Eddie's race does not factor into the story in any
significant way, but it's notable because of the relative rarity of having the main character in this type of book be a person of color.

afterschool and weekend undercover observer and sketch artist to help solve a baffling series of thefts in Manhattan museums.
In return, "Eddie Red, as the lead detective dubs him, hopes to earn enough money to attend a prestigious private school his family could not
otherwise afford. He works and clashes with a hard-boiled detective who doesn't really want Eddie on the case. Meanwhile, Eddie gets help from
his brainy and obsessive friend Jonah as they try to crack the mystery together.
The world of fine art and New York museums is perhaps a slightly odd choice as a setting for middle-grade novel, but Wells manages to make it
seem quite interesting and exciting. Young readers will definitely learn a few things about art -- and the intricacies of police work Eddie Red
Undercover: Mystery on Museum Mile along the way.
One complaint: The solution to one of the primary mysteries of the book is almost incomprehensible, even if you are chess fanatic.
That's the only downer in an otherwise fine book. Families can talk about mysteries. What makes a good one? Eddie has a photographic memory
and is a skilled artist. If you got involved in a mystery, what special skill do you have that might help solve it?

amazing ability.
He has a photographic mind and the artistic ability to be able to draw people he has mentally photographed. It all began the day his dad had to
break the bad news to Edmund that he would not be returning to his private Upper East Side school Senate for 7th grade; they just couldn't afford
it anymore. But just as this conversation was starting, Edmund and his dad heard a woman's Sixth grader Edmund Xavier Lonnrot has an amazing

But just as this conversation was starting, Edmund and his dad heard a woman's shout for help coming out of an alley. Telling Edmund to call the
police, his dad took off to help the lady.
Luckily, Edmund saw the "perp" and was able draw a much better Eddie Red Undercover: Mystery on Museum Mile of him than the police artist.
And so, Edmund Lonnrot became Eddie Red, working undercover for the gruff Eddie Red Undercover: Mystery on Museum Mile Bovano, who
clearly resents having this young kid doing police work. His job is to pretend to be a student artist, all the while keeping an eye out for anyone that
looks like the pictures Det.
Dovano very quickly showed him of the perps. At first, Eddie seems to just bungle everything. Working without any information, though, Eddie
soon begins to figure out what he is looking for and why with the help of his best friend, the very OCD Jonah, whose latest obsession is all things
military. The case has become important to Eddie. If he can help solve it, the police department will make a donation allowing him to return to his
private school in September. If he botches it, he is, as we used to say when I was a kid, "sorry outta luck.
Can he and Jonah accomplish what the police couldn't and do it under pressure of this deadline? Even though Eddie Red Undercover Eddie Red
Undercover: Mystery on Museum Mile a fair amount of suspension of disbelief on the part of the reader as if the NYPD would ever hire a young
kidit is a fun, entertaining book. It is told in the first person by Edmund? Eddie, who has a pretty good sense of humor about things, one can even
see the beginnings of a nice wry touch forming.
He is a really likable, somewhat geeky in the best sense of the word young man, whip smart and from an intact family - mom and dad are still in the
picture.
He is also African American. Eddie's friend Jonah is a big eater of peanut butter sandwiches and is also whip smart with a well developed ability to
detect patterns in anything, I would have liked to learn a little more about Jonah, but maybe in future Eddie Red novels.
Still, together Edmund and Jonah form quite the dynamic duo. The novel is a nice lighthearted mystery that is sure to appeal to middle school
readers.
Edmund is an astute observer of people and has plenty to say about them that will tickle a young readers funny bone. But there is also plenty of
excitement for them as well. Mar 13, Camilla rated it really liked it Shelves: books. Finally, a black protagonist for a cool middle grade series! I

he loves to attend.
But financial troubles are threatening his attendance for the next school year. How will he find enough money to pay for tuition?
Luckily or maybe nota situation presents itself in the form of helping to catch a mastermind art thief and his cohorts that have the NYPD stumped.
And luckily though not for the thiefEddie has a photographic memory, Eddie Red Undercover: Mystery on Museum Mile is just Eddie Red
Undercover: Mystery on Museum Mile the detectives need to nail the Picasso gang. With a little bit of reluctant acceptance from his parents and a
lot of support from his best friend, Jonah, Eddie Red is born.
I would have loved to have immersed myself in Mystery on Museum Mile if for nothing else but that it was really fun and easy to read. He
celebrates his skills, but he knows his shortcomings. He handles Jonah and his sometimes-wacky ways, which I give him a lot of credit for — I
definitely do not have the same kind of patience he has.
I also like that he celebrates his love of knowledge. Eddie likes many of the things that I do, including solving puzzles, looking at maps, and learning
languages, which endears me to him.
And the fact that he draws so well when I draw so NOT well only makes me applaud him more. The illustrations in this book are fantastic. The
only thing I wish is for there to have been Eddie Red Undercover: Mystery on Museum Mile of a variation of pictures. Although there were a few
other things, most of the illustrations were of people.
All that aside, Marcos Calo Eddie Red Undercover: Mystery on Museum Mile a truly phenomenal job. I encourage you to look at his other
works. Wells is funny. The one-liners that Eddie has, especially in reaction to Detective Bovano, are just chortle-chortle funny, which is my kind of
humour. One of my Squinks wants to know what happens to Detective Bovano at the end of the story. We had fun coming up with names of these
