TO ALL PARISHIONERS
TO ALL PARISHIONERS
Dear Friends.
As I sit down to write this letter my thoughts are very much with the
people of the Ukraine as they fight for what they believe in, but are faced with the
impossible task of seeking a way to settle the situation. We look on with horror as
the events unfold, not sure how this will end or even if we will all become involved in
the conflict.
At this time of year, we hear again the Easter story about Jesus, a man who
challenged the status quo, turned the values of society upside down, offered a way
to bridge the natural and the supernatural world and on Good Friday gave his life for
all of us. Watching him die were the men and women who followed, supported and
learned from him. All the possibilities he seemed to offer came to an end, when
Jesus on the cross, cried out the words, 'It is finished!' bows his head and gave up
the spirit. So, was it the end? Did the Friday that we call Good Friday mark the end
of the Jesus story? Did his followers slink off home, defeated and dispirited? Maybe
so, for a couple of days, but then Jesus was raised again to life, a new life that
somehow broke through all human understanding of what it meant to die.
For Christians, the death and resurrection of Jesus lies at the heart of what it means
to be truly human. Why? Because Christians believe that every barrier that might be
placed between turning evil to good, between lies and truth, between slavery and
freedom, and ultimately, between God and humanity, was broken down on that first
Easter Sunday morning. It represents hope of a new start, a new direction, a new
future and the opportunity to be truly fulfilled humans. It may be that at the moment
we all feel a little bit like Jesus' followers – the world seems uncertain and
dangerous, the news constantly elevates our concerns, creating a picture of a world
we can no longer really understand.
Easter, however, is a story of hope. Easter tells us that, however bad our situation
might appear to be, there is a way forward, even if we can't see it right now, and
there is always prayer. It may be prayer to the God you believe in. It may be prayer
to the God you don't know. It may even be prayer that has no known destination.
Many people, of all ages, have found that praying can have remarkable results.
Sometimes, it may feel as though we are forever stuck in Good Friday but we must
remember that Easter Sunday always follows.
Prayer
Dear Lord, Thank you for the inspiration and hope that we can take from the Easter
story. Help us to bring that hope and kindness to all those we can.

Another Landlord and Landlady from the past was Richard and Val Turner, who ran

Richard ran a very orderly house, If he saw a couple kissing he would soon say not

for many years after that.
I remember taking my new born Daughter in there, only to have Judy Harper take

One of the best memories must be one of the Fancy Dress evenings, Gill, my late

Eric Bunkall who dressed up as Val, the landlady, with his eyebrows pencilled in,
and one of Val’s cardigans on, he did make you do a double take! Nice one Eric.
Richard started the Darts team which I mentioned in a previous edition.
I hope this brought back some memories, and made you smile? And if anyone has

Lord of lords and Prince of peace, our politicians are predicting the biggest war in
Europe since 1945, and we simply cry out to you urgently to write another story in
our time. Thwart the dark machinations of evil men. Give wisdom beyond human
wisdom to peacemakers seeking an equitable and less violent way. May politicians
exercise the wisdom from above, which is peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, and full
of mercy.
Lord in your mercy. Hear our prayer
Holy Spirit, we pray for the church in Ukraine, a nation in which 70% of the
population call themselves Christian. Give our many brothers and sisters in that
nation courage in this crisis that they may proclaim the good news of your kingdom,
bind up broken hearts, and bring comfort to all who mourn.
Lord in your mercy. Hear our prayer
You Lord, make wars cease to the end of the earth; you break bows, shatter spears,
and burn shields with fire. And so we ask you now to save the lives of many people
in Ukraine. Make a peace that is strong and not weak.
De-escalate this crisis. We hear of wars and rumours of wars but you Lord are our
rock, our fortress and our deliverer. Our hope is in you. And so we address the
nations now. In the name of Jesus we say: “Be still and know God! He is exalted
among the nations; he shall be exalted in the earth.
Lord in your mercy. Hear our prayer

Take a Bow Gayton Skateboarding Youngsters!
A few Saturdays ago, I took my 7yr old granddaughter, with her brand-
new skateboard, to practice on our Gayton skatepark. Two young
teenage lads were already on there and we stood watching them, in
awe, at their very impressive moves. After a short while, they said
'Come on, there's plenty of room' and moved over for her.
Being shy and a novice, she was still worried about going on there,
then the boys picked up their things and with a cheery 'There you go'
went off to play on other things.
Granddaughter spent a happy ten minutes (?)
on the skatepark, feeling very grown up and
having the space all to herself.
I have no idea who the boys were, but they
were so kind and lovely, I want to say a big
thank you from me and one happy, little girl.

Compost Corner
The more you sow, the more you reap! Well, not always in my
case because 'green fingered, I ain't!
I do have trouble with carrot germination and the first early variety
I set three weeks ago, not one has surfaced. So strategy no 2. I
have sown three or four seeds in module; let me tell you more. When you buy little
bedding plants, they often come in a bottomless carrying trays and these I put into
saved mushroom containers. I fill up the holes with seed compost and pop in the
seeds, so should they germinate, they can easily be transplanted out into a row in
the garden without disturbing the roots.
Pricking out isn't my favourite task, but there is plenty to do this time of year. Later
this month, we should be able to harden things off a bit by leaving them out during
the day and covering them at night, just for two or three days.
Potatoes can be planted this month, along with onion sets, chard, kale and most
brassicas. I like to try something different each year, so for the first time we are
growing Celeriac. They need a bit of heat to get them off, but a warm window sill will
suffice. I set them in little modules and so far so good, but they are more tortoise
seedlings than hares!
Keep up with the weeding, grass cutting and edging and take time out to enjoy your
patch, pots or estate. Fleur Potts

Ukraine Aid Appeal
What an amazing success !! Huge thanks to all of you who were so
kind in your donations, ranging from dog food, medication, bedding
and warm clothing, to mention just a few items - the generosity has
been extraordinary. Not least from the year 1 pupils at Gayton
Academy -- (photo attached)
Four large van loads of boxed donations were delivered over the weekend of 12th
March and by now , hopefully,
are being used by those in
need !
Also thanks goes to the
Trustees of the Village Hall for
not only opening the Hall but
also manning it for 4 very
busy shifts !
A massive vote of thanks and
credit goes to Richard Grant
for "setting the ball rolling" and
sifting and sorting all the
donations and of course those
that volunteered to help. Tim Desborough

I set myself a challenge of running continuously
around my local village of Gayton from Sunrise to
Sunset in support of YANA, the rural mental health
charity on Saturday 16th April.
Every week, 1 in 6 adults in the UK have
experience mental health issues such as
depression or anxiety.
Every week, 1 in 5 adults in the UK have
considered take it their own lives.
I am raising awareness of YANA so they can help
more people who may be struggling.
The last few years have been particularly tough with Covid and now with the
situation in Ukraine and the on going issues with the cost of living etc.
If one person gets help after seeing this post or joining me for a lap it will all be worth
while.
If would like to join me for a lap or two, either running, jogging, walking you will be
more than welcome, I will be there from 6am to 8pm
The laps start and finish at The Crown in Gayton and there will be a warm welcome
before or after or just come along and support!
As it's Easter Saturday I am doing an Easter Egg amnesty, so if you have spare
Easter Eggs bring them along as I will consume my body weight in chocolate during
the 14 hours of running and any left over will be donated to charity.
See you on the 16th April!
Lifted off Facebook by myself for those not on social media. For those who
want to donate to this much needed cause , details on Page 39. Ed
