Online Projects, Collaboration Sites and Publishing Opportunities

Lesson Idea Name: Student New Report

Content Area: Social studies
Grade Level(s): 6th grade
Content Standard Addressed:

SS6H3 Explain conflict and change in Europe.

Technology Standard Addressed: 1.1 Empowered Learner, 1.2 Digital Citizen

Selected Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity:

URL(s) to support the lesson: http://www.cnn.com/CNNI/Programs/ireport/

Describe how you would incorporate an Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity in your
classroom: Students will be put into groups of 3-4 and will have to research the key points on the cold war
and create a documentary about the conflict. Students can create news segments, interviews and “first-hand”
experiences on the cold war and turn it into a 10 min long documentary. This format will allow students to
show creativity with script and video making while also incorporating what they know about the subject.
Students can then post their documentary to CNN iReport and share with eachother their different videos.
When the students share their projects to the website, multiple people will be allowed to see the video from
inside and outside the classroom. This will help the project reach a higher LoTi level and a higher Bloom’s
level. These projects can also be used time and time again to reference or remind students of the topics of the
cold war.

What technologies would be required to implement this proposed learning activity in a classroom?
A computer or laptop to research and edit. A camera or phone to record documentary.
Describe how the following features are addressed in this learning experience (note: all of them may not be
addressed in the project, but most should be if you are reaching a high LoTi Level).
a. Collaboration with peers, near-peers, mentors outside their classroom and often beyond their
school: Students will work together in groups with their peers and create a video that will be seen by
other peers in other classrooms or schools.

b. Student-centered learning and knowledge creation (creating original data and or producing original
products as a result of engaging in a project): Students are in control of finding their own information
and creating their own documentary while following guidelines that won’t disrupt their creative
freedom.

c. Higher-order thinking: Students must think outside the box and create a moving and educational
documentary.

d. Students publishing their original work to others who will use/care about their product: Students
will submit their videos to a website that can be viewed by other peers and monitored by teachers.

Levels of Technology Integration (LoTi Level): (Select the best level)

☐ Level 1: Awareness ☐ Level 2: Exploration ☐ Level 3: Infusion ☐ Level 4: Integration

☒ Level 5: Expansion ☐ Level 6: Refinement

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): This project will allow all students to learn effectively. Students will be
required to research information from any credible source (Book or technology), then they will have to make a
script depicting the research they have found. Next the students will record the information through acting
and presenting practices. The students won’t have to present but their videos will be shown in the classroom
and this will take away from stage fright.

Lesson idea implementation and Internet Safety Policies: Students will be safe using this website because it
is password protected and you have the option to make the video private so that only the creator can see the
video.

Reflective Practice: This project is fun, long and interactive so students will not just remember information but
retain the information they have found. Other videos shown to students can also impact others through
creative informational presentations.
