From ships in service with DE -84VT2BF-1S0 and DE -74VT2BF-160 engines

and the above type of serrated coupl ings we have in a few cases heard
of loosening and breaking of screws in the aft serrated coupling due to
insufficient tightening. In isolated cases misalignment has been a contributory
cause.

We therefore recommend to check that the serrations are in order and that
bolts and screws are tightened with the torques given below.

If in spite of correct tightening the connections show tendency to slackening

again after a week's running we ask you to contact us for further assistance.

At the same time we ask you to correct an error in instruction book

drawing No. XXIV. In the longitudinal section of the reversing mechanism
the serrated coupling to the right of the chain wheel has to have item No.
50 instead of 40.

If it for DE -84VT2BF-180 is considered advantageous to apply same tightening

torque 70 kgm to both couplings the bolts in the foremost coupling should be
replaced by stronger bo Its made from materia I with tensi le strength of 75-90
kp/mm 2 •

The engines that we have delivered to you with this type of couplings are
installed in the ships named in the enclosed list.
