Woodward Governor
Damage to Taper Pins

Dear Sirs,

In main engines not equipped with hydraulic governing amplifier we have


encountered some cases of damage to the taper locking pins in the terminal
lever of the Woodward governor. Norma lIy the governor is protected
against overstressing by a resilient pull rod inserted between terminal lever
and fuel pumps, preventing transmission of stronger static forces than
corresponding to the capacity of the governor.

It appears, however, that under particular conditions e.g. incorrect ad just-


ment of manoeuvring gear and air cylinder, considerable inertia forces may
be transmitted to the governor lever which is thereby overstressed.

To obviate this drawback we propose the modifications stated be low.

1. The resilient pull rod is so blocked that it can only be compressed, but
not extended.
For 74VT2BF-160 (2 designs of resilient pull rod drwg. No. 1520B12 or
drwg. No. 1496B99) and for 62VT2BF-140 (resilient pull rod drwg. No.
1580B74) blocking is carried out by shortening pull rod and spring
guide in accordance with supplementary drawing No. 403772-1.0. For
50VT2BF-110 (resilient pull rod drwg. No. 1531B92) blocking will be
carried out by shortening spring housing and replacement of spring guide
with a new one according to drwg. No.404494-6. See supplementary
drawing No. 422334-0.0.

2. The throttling screw on the stop cylinder at the end opposite to the air
supply is set one thread open so that the braking effect is increased

c lose to top position. After setting the shut-down function should be


checked. Then the throttle screw is locked as shown on drawing No.
422259-70.

3. It is checked that the pull rod connection between the air cylinder and
the governor is ad justed in accordance with the instruction below and the
pertaining drawing No. 191542.
The speed setting lever is moved to "Max.". Then terminal arm "C" of
the governor is moved to its O-position. The pu II rod head .. B" is so
ad justed that the piston of the air cylinder reaches its stop position 1-2
mm before the terminal arm "C" of the governor reaches its stop position
in the governor.
