Deuterium
(ii) An atom of deuterium contains a neutron in the nucleus but a normal hydrogen atom do not
contain a neutron in the nucleus.
3.10. (a) Isotopes are atoms (of the same element) which have the same atomic number
but different mass numbers. They have the same number of protons but different numbers of
neutrons.
(b) The difference between potassium39 and Potassium 41 is Potassium39 has 20 neutrons but
Potassium41 has 22 neutrons.
(c) Both isotopes are called potassium because the identity of the element is defined by the
number of protons and since they have 19 protons, they are called potassium.
(d) relative atomic mass = (93 × 39) + (7 × 41) / 100
= 3914 / 100
= 39.1
