The Play I Like the Most

Ariel

Have you ever wondered if your name can be remembered forever or passed

down from generation to generation? And what is the price of sacrificing behind

the immortality of these names? Just like the protagonist "Antigone" I'm going to

talk about today, although her name can be written in a Greek tragedy, the price

she needed to pay was to sacrifice her own life. As far as I am concerned, the

play and the character I like the most is definitely written by Sophocles’

“Antigone.” Because when I was reading Antigone, I deeply " fell in love" with

her. I really admire her for being strong, opposing evil laws, and having the

courage to fight against the power, even at the expense of her own life.

At the beginning of the script, Antigone rebelled against the laws promulgated

by Creon that violated justice and even the will of God, and she launched a series

of fighting spirits. However, my first expression of her was that she was foolish

and arbitrary. For one thing, her unyielding spirit eventually brought her a great

deal of suffering, which contributed to her execution. For another, her arrogant

and relentless execution of what she saw as righteous action was too arbitrary

and insane, making her unwilling to think or listened to other people's opinions.
But after reading the whole story, I completely change my mind about her. I

think her fighting spirit is courageous and brave. She believed that the evil laws

were illegal; therefore, no matter how strong Creon’s power or laws were, she

won’t obey them. From my perspective, Antigone chose to stick to her idealism

and followed her own inner voice instead of following the crowd to follow the

orders. Her bravery and insistence on her idealism reminded me of a quote

from《Antigone》that touched me a lot: " Even if I know it won't work, at least

I can do the best I can.” From my point of view, Antigone really trusted the

decision she had make rather than foolishly following the orders with others.

However, to my way of thinking, the theme of "Antigone" is not only about

how to face the complicated world of growing up, but it is also about how to

realize self-worth. In the adult world, there are always many sudden changes that

break our original living conditions, and we are always forced to choose to

compromise with reality because of helplessness. Nevertheless, it is absolutely

impossible to ignore the reality of society and completely indulge ourselves in

our own ideals. But on the contrary, what if we completely compromise with

reality and destroy all our ideals? As a consequence, the theme of this play

describes two extremely characters by showing how human beings must strike a

balance between adhering to their own ideals and make an appropriate

concession when it is necessary. In addition, this is also a work that can cause

readers to think deeply and explore the meaning of life.

Small in appearance; however, Antigone was stronger in spirit than anyone else.

She disdained to trade compromise for her life and silence for the rest of her life.

Perhaps she was born to be a rebel, but that is the reason why I appreciate her so

much, and it is also the reason why《Antigone》can span thousands of years and

remembered by people from generation to generation.
