ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY
PRELIM EXAMINATION
I.IDENTIFICATION:
Read the statement carefully and write your answer on the space provided after
the number.

1. LABORATORY APPARATUS It is a set of materials or equipment designed for a

particular use or purpose.

2. BEAKER It is a deep, wide-mouthed, thin-walled cylindrical vessel with calibration

and pouring lip, used for measuring large quantity of liquid; also a container of for
boiling water, solution or liquid mixture.

3. John Yates III, M.D., Ph.D. He is the Best known for the development of the
SEQUEST algorithm for automated peptide sequencing and Multidimensional Protein
Identification Technology (MudPIT).

4. Gustav Robert Kirchhoff He coined the term black-body radiation in 1862.

5. ASPIRATOR It is a rubber-made material used for cleaning pans of different types of

balances and for withdrawing or getting liquids through the use of pipette.

6. Ruedi / Rudolf Aebersold He is also one of the inventors of the Isotope-Coded

Affinity Tag (ICAT) reagents used in quantitative mass spectrometry (MS).
7. ERLENMEYER FLASK It is a long-necked, this glass material with rounded body
which is used as reaction vessel and gas apparatus.
8. Robert Wilhelm Eberhard Bunsen He investigated emission spectra of heated
elements, and discovered caesium (in 1860) and rubidium (in 1861) with the physicist
Gustav Kirchhoff.

9.MEDICINE DROPPER It is a short glass or plastic tube with one end constricted and
the other end fitted to a rubber bulb to measure small amount of liquid and in
administering liquids by drops.

10. George Thomas Whitesides He is best known for his work in the areas of Nuclear
magnetic resonance spectroscopy, organometallic chemistry, molecular self-assembly,
soft lithography, microfabrication, microfluidics, and nanotechnology.

11. BURETTE It is a long graduated glass tube with a narrow outlet, used for
delivering a measured volume of liquid or measuring the quantity of a gas or liquid
collected or discharged, also used in volumetric analysis or titration process.

12. Andreas Manz He is generally considered as the founding father of the “lab-on-a-
chip” field, currently revolutionizing the analytical and life sciences at a fast pace.

13. Jonathan V. Sweedler His research has led to the discovery of some mammalian
neuropeptides.

14. Pat Sandra He is widely known scientist who has made an indelible mark on the
development of chromatography.

15. Georges Guiochon He has the most essential contributions related to

advancements of analytical and preparative liquid chromatography in theory and
practice, thus becoming the highest cited chromatographer ever.

16. CRUCIBLE It is a vessel used for heating or melting substances requiring

extreme heat and temperature.
17._ R. Graham Cooks He was a pioneer in the conception and implementation of
tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) and of desorption ionization, especially molecular
secondary ionization mass spectrometry (SIMS).

18. REAGENT BOTTLE It is a glass container with narrow neck covered by a rock or
glass stopper, which is used for storing reagents.

19. ERLENMEYER FLASK It is a thin, long-necked, cone-shaped glass flat bottom

used as container for heating chemical substances.

20. Barry L. Karger He research that the separations are demonstrated in the two-
dimensional gel electrophoretic separation of sulfur-35 methionine-labeled polypeptides,
or proteins, from transformed epithelial amnion cells (AMA)

1. What is your reflection in your analytical chemistry subject? (100 words)

Analytical chemistry is important it is science that is directed towards creating

new knowledge so that chemical analysis can be improved to respond to

increasing or new demands. Analytical chemistry plays an important role in our

day today life. It is used in drug manufacturing, medical diagnostic, forensic

survey, soil testing to check for appropriate concentrations of minerals and

nutrients, environmental monitoring. It is also of great role in different research

areas. Analytical chemistry has an important role in everyday life. It helps to

measure the simple medical tests like serum cholesterol, urine ketones, and

blood glucose level, Analytical techniques also help in determining the levels of

toxic waste in the body like uric acid, cholesterol, drugs and some salts. Soil

testing, water testing are also important roles of Analytical chemistry in everyday

life. analytical chemistry can be found in cross-disciplinary and interdisciplinary

areas, focused on solving important societal challenges and engaging young and

bright scientists.
