An inquisitive child, I was always passionate about learning, and was captivated by books on

machines and space science. Reading about the different machines in various sectors like space
exploration, manufacturing, automobile and much more, established my belief in what I wanted to do in
the long run. An introduction to manufacturing and design in the undergraduate program gave me an
insight into the fascinating sector of designing. It was at this juncture, that I understood the importance of
higher education that would allow me to contribute effectively to this field. Moreover, interning in the
industry, and interacting with some of the professionals, has allowed me to witness the nuances of the
real-world functioning and the level of expertise required to design machines. Since then, I have worked
towards preparing myself for this field, and I feel that a master’s program in <course name> is the best
place to acquire the necessary knowledge that would help me to realize my potential.

I visited several workshops and garages to watch engineers assembling and disassemble
machinery parts. To delve deeper into this field, I decided to pursue my undergraduate course in
Mechanical Engineering. During this period, I enjoyed exploring topics such as Machine Design,
CAD/CAM, Manufacturing Processes, Machine Tools, and Machining Processes as these gave me direct
insights into the design and manufacture of machinery. Apart from these, I concentrated on Material
Science and Nanotechnology as I realized their immense applications in modern engineering processes,
especially in the manufacturing sector. I was also interested in learning about the design parameters of IC
engines, its evolution in time, and the latest innovations taking place in this area. However, the best
period of my undergraduate course was the time I spent in my mechanical workshop classes working on
forging, carpentry, molding and casting, and designing basic and advanced machines as these gave me
hands-on exposure.

As an avid reader in science and engineering, I was interested in exploring a specific topic
concerning the thermal analysis of EDM processes to chart out their thermal profiles. Hence, I carried out
an extensive study on the modern technology of Electro Discharge Machining (EDM) and performed
thermal modeling of workpieces under various conditions. Based on my initial results, I created thermal
profiles using ANSYS by specifying the process conditions, and analyzed these conditions for their
ability to build components for high strength requirements in airplanes, automobiles, medical equipment,
and space probes. All information was obtained from the Tool Room Training Centre, Patna, which had
the necessary machines, and simulations were performed to generate plots of workpieces based on
temperature. By comparing various processes and materials, I was able to determine the processes and
materials that were best suited to each other. While collecting information for this project, I had the
chance to witness EDM hole drilling which is used for making circuit boards, and military and aerospace
components. Apart from acquiring expertise in carrying out thermal analysis of a manufacturing process,
I learned how to make and deliver a comprehensive presentation detailing my work, results obtained, and
possible real-world applications of my data.

After successfully executing my theoretical project on thermal analysis, I was eager to gain
practical exposure in the field of heavy machinery and so, I worked on the preparation and use of nano-
refrigerants in a refrigerator to understand its performance parameters. Nanofluids are a recent invention
and investigation on its applications and performance is ongoing in several research laboratories around
the world. Its properties of high heat transfer capacity and low coefficient of friction help reduce energy
consumption thus increasing efficiency and reducing costs. Due to its energy conservation capabilities, I
was interested in exploring its uses in a domestic refrigerator. As the team leader, I was involved in
obtaining all the necessary materials such as PAG lubricants, refrigerants, and other equipment. We
prepared the Aluminium oxide and Graphene nanomaterials by dispersing the nanoparticles in the
refrigerant and lubricant using devices such as oscillator and magnetic stirrer. Finally, we charged the
refrigerator compressor with the nanofluid and recorded the performance parameters which showed
notable improvement in efficiency and relative stability of the fluid. This project helped me gain
familiarity with one of the most revolutionary technologies of the current age and encouraged me to think
in terms of conceptualizing designs that can make commonly used equipment more energy-efficient.

Having explored the theoretical world, I was now looking for opportunities to better understand
the working of the industry. I started with an internship at Cochin Shipyard Ltd, one of the largest and
most progressive shipyards globally. Here, I learned about the latest equipment and technologies related
to the manufacture of ships right from obtaining raw materials to testing the final product. I had the
chance to talk with engineers from different departments and learn about the design and assembly of
various types of vessels. Being interested in the design and manufacturing of aircraft carriers, I visited the
INS Vikramaditya and observed its superior facilities custom-built for the Indian Navy. Overall, this
internship gave me insights into the manufacturing processes of oil tankers and passenger vessels and
helped me gain an overview of the various steps involved in ship building.

Wanting to gain a working knowledge of design aspects of machines in a petroleum refinery, I

did an internship at the Kochi refinery of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd, which converts petroleum to
diesel, gasoline, and aviation turbine fuel. Kochi refinery is a massive process plant with heavy-duty
equipment such as pressure vessels, heat exchangers, and tanks, and this gave me a chance to compare my
theoretical knowledge of machine design with design requirements in the industry. I worked in the
Inspection and Maintenance Department where I observed that the design of machines depended on
factors such as temperature and pressure of products that were passed through a component. This was
very important for me as I learned about several factors that were not covered in class but were critical in
the design of equipment such as pressure vessels and heat exchangers. With the help of my supervisors, I
also acquired hands-on experience in NDT methods and took actual readings from the equipment to
understand how design influences their functionality.

Having received valuable exposure in the practical aspects of the design and manufacturing of
machines in different areas, I now wish to acquire advanced knowledge and a well-rounded skill set in my
area of interest through a postgraduate program in Manufacturing and Design. After completing my
higher studies, I hope to work in one of the best manufacturing companies such as Tesla, General
Electric, Boeing, or Space X in product development and research areas. I would like to take inspiration
from the latest developments in the manufacturing domain such as nano and micro-manufacturing, and
3D printing technologies. Eventually, I would like to work as a Lead Project Designer or Senior Engineer
for a scientific organization such as CERN or NASA. This will give me immense professional exposure
to the biggest and most revolutionary projects of our time.

To contribute to high-value design and manufacturing projects, I wish to take up a postgraduate

program in Manufacturing and Design at ________ University. The numerous design and fabrication
projects that I have worked on during my undergraduate period have given me a strong command over the
concepts. I now wish to deepen my understanding of the field and become up-to-date with the most recent
trends in the manufacturing sector. I intend to acquire a strong skill set by pursuing several exciting and
challenging projects at your state-of-the-art research facilities. Being guided by accomplished faculty
such as _______ and __________ at your premises will help me take my projects to the next level and
acquire a more comprehensive understanding of the field.

My experiences in implementing concepts and software for the design of different types of
machines have given me a strong knowledge of my subjects, and I am confident that my aptitude and
passion for design and manufacturing will help me stand out at your campus.
