I. LEARNING SKILLS
A. Most Essential Learning Competency
Gathers and analyzes data with intellectual honesty and using suitable
techniques
B. Objective
Collects data with intellectual honesty using suitable techniques

II. INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT

Vocabulary List

1. Data Collection (n)- a systematic process of gathering an observation or

measurements; it allows to gain first-hand knowledge and original insights
about the research problem
2. Data Analysis (n)- a process of understanding the data or known facts or
assumptions serving as basis of claims or conclusions
3. Intellectual honesty (n)-an honesty in the acquisition, analysis, and
transmission of ideas, being intellectually honest when knowing the truth and
stating the truth

Qualitative data collection methods include ethnography, narrative,

phenomenological, grounded theory, and case study. On the other hand, quantitative
research uses survey, causal-comparative, and experiments. To collect high-quality
data relevant to the research purpose with intellectual honesty, choose the data
collection method suited for your research. Experimental research is primarily a
quantitative method, interviews/ focus group discussion (FGD) and ethnography are
qualitative methods. Surveys, observations, archival research, and secondary data
collections method can be quantitative or qualitative research questions. For a detailed
review of when to use and how to collect the data using different techniques/methods,
check the table below:

Data collection methods

Method When to use How to collect data
Experiment To test a casual relationship. Manipulate variables and
measure their effects on others.
Survey To understand the general Distribute a list of questions to

group of people. over-the-phone.
Interview/focus To gain in-depth Measure or survey a sample
group understanding of perceptions without trying to affect them.
or opinions on a topic.
Ethnography To study the culture of a Join and participate in a
community or organization community and record your
first-hand. observations and reflections.
Archival research To understand current or Access manuscripts,
historical events, conditions or documents or records from
practices. libraries, depositories or the
internet.
Secondary data To analyze data from Find existing datasets that have
collection populations that you can’t already been collected, from

agencies or research
organizations.

Intellectual Honesty in research is an applied method of problem solving,

characterized by an unbiased, and honest attitude, which can be demonstrated in a
number of different ways such as:
 ensuring support for chosen ideologies does not interfere with the pursuit of truth;
 relevant facts and information are not purposefully omitted even when such
things may contradict one's hypothesis;
 facts are presented in an unbiased manner, and not twisted to give misleading
impressions or to support one view over another; and
 references, or earlier work, are acknowledged where possible, and plagiarism is
avoided.
To ensure that you are recording a high quality of data in a systematic way, follow the
following best practices:
 Record all the relevant information when you obtain the data.
 Double check the manual data for errors.
 If a quantitative data is collected, you can assess the reliability and the validity to
indicate that the data is quality.

III. ACTIVITIES
A. Practice Tasks
Task 1: Using the concept map below, write the words that are associated
with
intellectual honesty.

A. Draw a happy face  on the blank if the practice is showing intellectual

honesty and a sad face  if not.
______1. Relevant facts and information are purposefully omitted from the data
collected even when such may contradict one's hypothesis.
______2. Stating only the information from the data gathered using the certain data
collection methods.
______3. Presenting information in a biased manner, and twisting the information to
give a misleading impression.
______4. Omitting relevant facts and information from the data collected.
______5. Facts are presented in an unbiased manner, and not twisted to give
misleading impressions or to support one view over another.

Task 2: Using the survey on the Frequency of Habits Before and During the
Covid-19 Pandemic, collect data with intellectual honesty by putting
a check mark on the frequency that applies to you.

Task 3: Interview two to three of your classmates via phone call about their
plans after senior high school graduation and how research played
a role in their chosen track and strand.
 What are the challenges they encounter?
 What strategies are used to solve the issue?
 What are the benefits of research?
 How does research help them?
Reminders:
 Use notes to write down all the information gathered from the interview.
 Record the interviews with the consent of the interviewee observing intellectual
honesty.
 Only those information/data collected from the interview should be recorded.
 Transcribe the interview.
 Submit the recorded or written interview transcription.

B. Assessment
Collect data from the interview conducted in Task 3. Make sure that the
report is taken from the interview notes, record, or transcription observing
intellectual honesty. Your report must consist of a brief details about the
report (e.g., description of the interviewee and the interview location).
Report may be presented through an essay, paragraph, or narratives.
Use the criteria below as your guide in making a report.

Presentation of the Report (well-written and organized) -10%

Data Collected (quality of data) - 40%
Intellectual Honesty (accuracy of information) - 40%
Grammar/Usage/Mechanics (report is free from errors) -10%
