OTT and Multi-Screen For Latin America Operators: Whitepaper
OTT and Multi-Screen For Latin America Operators: Whitepaper
Introduction
The landscape of the television industry is going through a period of rapid change, as
advanced IP/hybrid technologies are implemented by operators and service providers
across the globe. Nowhere is this truer than in Latin America, where economic
growth in several countries has expanded the middle class and increased disposable
incomes.
By 2016, according to the market research firm Dataxis (Streaming Video, OTT and
TV Everywhere, 2011), Brazil is forecasted to have 11.8 million pay DTH households
- an 18.8% penetration rate - which is double the current number of Pay TV
households.
At the same time, Dataxis anticipates the number of Over The Top (OTT) subscribers
will soar from 1.25 to 13 million, an increase of 924%. This suggests OTT business
models will present a major opportunity for content providers and distributors.
Two categories of players can benefit from this new delivery method:
Those who own and create content but have no network infrastructure
For both segments OTT delivery represents a game changer in offering flexible and affordable
multi-screen delivery solutions.
Over The Top delivery often means different things to different people: it can
represent anything from a value chain to a new set of technologies. However for most
broadcast industry players, the concept of OTT relates to the capability to deliver
services and content to connected devices over unmanaged networks.
OTT enables those who do not own the network to monetize their content and to
reach end-users. For network owners, OTT technologies can enable partnerships

with third parties that provide access to value-added content and applications to their
customers, helping to distinguish their services from competitors.
For satellite and cable operators, OTT also offers the opportunity to reach new customers outside of their
traditional footprint. This means they can sell their entire bouquet of services, with the addition of non-linear
content, to a wider population; for example, those living outside the HFC network or within densely populated
city areas where the use of satellite dishes is prohibited.
Many content distributors have already developed great online on-demand and
premium television services for PCs and tablets. The adoption of more connected
devices and the build out of new IP networks will definitely accelerate this trend. In
parallel, content can now be easily brought back to where it belongs - the television
screen, creating a true content ubiquity experience over multiple screens. TV must
reclaim its position at the heart of the living-room, where it can offer a lean-back,
shared experience that can yield much greater subscription and transactional
revenues.
How can content owners and distributors benefit from these emerging
online technologies without investing too heavily in new infrastructure
or taking risks on immature solutions?
Our solution
The best solution here is to adopt best-of-breed technologies from broadcast players
that are leaders in their particular fields and can thus draw on best practices from a
broad range of international deployments.

openness of each component also secures the overall system’s roadmap with a
wider ecosystem of complementary products.
There are a number of components needed for any successful next generation TV
deployment: an effective ingest workflow for perfect picture quality, a cost effective
CDN, multi-screen Content Management and a simple and fluid user experience.
A coalition of experts from across the broadcast value chain has come together to
offer the full range of complementary technologies to meet these specific
requirements.

This Joint solution offers a complete platform using complementary technologies to
allow:
OTT (over unmanaged networks) and the aggregation of services over the
Internet
Hybrid IPTV: a smooth mix of broadcast, web and home network content.
ATEME’s transcoding solutions process live and offline content for linear TV, Catch-
up TV and VOD services on multiple screens (TV sets, tablets, PCs and
smartphones). Resulting of 100+ man.x.year of advanced research on compression
technologies, ATEME’s TITAN is a universal software transcoder developed to match
multi-platform requirement, such as DTH, Hybrid TV, as well as delivery over the
Internet thanks to the supported adaptive streaming formats. TITAN meets business
expectation for pristine video quality at broadband speeds of below 1Mbps.
TITAN is a highly dense and scalable blade-based frame that can be populated as network
capacity or demand for more content increases. Based on an Intel® architecture, TITAN offers
full flexibility to the operators to stay in synch with market trends. The usage on the Intel’s
chipsets goes beyond a simple technology compliancy. The guarantee to rely on the latest
available chipset generation leads TITAN Live to produce high processing and throughput
performance over years.
Finally, TITAN features service convergence and high degree of automation; this
ensures operational and capital expenditures are kept to a minimum while end-users
benefit from an enhanced TV Everywhere experience.

2) Delivering content: BROADPEAK
Broadpeak’s solutions enable the delivery of premium video over multiple networks
(OTT, IPTV, IP Cable, hybrid IPTV) to any screen, for both Live and VoD content.
Broadpeak BkS family of servers provides a flexible, efficient and unified solution for
streaming the most popular video formats: Adobe® Flash®, Microsoft® Silverlight®
smooth streaming, Apple® HTTP live streaming and Transport Stream.
Broadpeak servers offer a solution for each popular format and a flexible system with
several layers of storage for achieving the best volume/ bandwidth compromise.
In addition to VoD functionality, the BkS servers also support other value-added
applications including Network Personal Video Recording (NPVR) and Network Time
Shifting (NTS) services.
Using Broadpeak’s Operator CDN solution, a network service provider launching its own
Operator CDN, can provide a global CDN with bandwidth or session quotas sold to content
providers directly or through resellers. Broadpeak uses open APIs to guarantee maximum
interoperability and has been certified as being fully compatible with Ateme, Netgem and KIT
Digital’s technologies.

3) Managing content: KIT DIGITAL
The KIT Video Platform’s broadcast-grade, modular architecture enables the delivery
of highly customized solutions that meet the demands of the world’s most advanced
and large-scale broadband video deployments.
This core methodology provides a flexible deployment model that includes open cloud,
managed private cloud, and hybrid cloud options, while allowing the platform to be easily
extended through the addition of new, discrete components, as well as integration with third-
party solutions. The KIT Video Platform leverages third party application and content delivery
services to ensure a high degree of scalability, while minimizing operational and maintenance
costs.
The KIT Connected Device Framework is a set of tools and SDKs that enable
customers to quickly and easily deploy a broad range of video experiences to a
growing set of mobile and connected devices. The Framework provides customers
with a collection of native application templates that can be configured using the KIT
App Studio authoring tool, as well as a comprehensive Software Developer Kit (SDK)
including documentation, sample applications, API connectors and Digital Rights
Management (DRM) modules. The KIT Connected Device Framework leads the
market in facilitating the creation of second-screen interactive TV, where mobile
applications enhance the TV experience. Beyond simple remote controls, these
applications allow users to see what their friends are watching, comment on content,
and even chat while watching with friends in a virtual living room. Mobile companion
ads, synced with the TV advertisement, offer instantaneous, deep engagement
between the user and the brand.

Conclusion:
The content delivery market is set to go through a period of huge growth in the
LATAM market and competition is likely to be fierce. This means service providers
must be able to offer next generation multi-screen television services in order to meet
consumer expectations and differentiate their offering. However, at the same time,
they must also be able to keep costs down while scaling with the market’s growth.
OTT technologies offer the means to meet these requirements and limit risk by using existing
infrastructure, limiting upfront investment costs and ensuring the fast roll-out of services.
A huge amount of innovation in OTT has stemmed from specialist players, who have
become known as experts as their respective fields. To meet the specific needs of
the Latin America market, some of the most respected names in the broadcast space
have come together to combine their best-of-breed technologies. A coalition like the
one between ATEME, Broadpeak, Kit Digital and Netgem delivers a fully integrated
cost-effective and flexible solution.
