NUMBER AND PLACE VALUE

Recall:
What is a number?

Number is the arithmetic value expressed by using a word or symbol, or a figure.

(or)
A number is a mathematical object used to count, measure, and label.

Example:

1,2,3,4,5………. these are called numbers.

DIGITS

What are digits?

Any number from 0 to 9 and especially forming a part of numbers is called digits.

Example:

2, 3, 4, 6 etc. these all are one digits.

12, 23, 99, .. these all are two digits.

143, 341, 999, 100,… these all are three digits.

FACE VALUE

▪ Face value:
The value of the digit in the number is called a face value.

Example:

What is the face value of 2 in 2496 ?

Ans: The face value of 2 in 2496 is 2 only.

COMPARE AND ORDERING NUMBERS

The numbers are compared and arranged from least value to the greater value
or from greater value to the least.

Example:

120, 1560, 195, 445, 550

Step 1 Write the numbers in a sequence

1 - 120, 1560, 195, 445, 550

Step 2 Pick up the least numbers from the series and write in a sequence
2 - 120, 195, 445, 550, 1560

ROUNDING UP TO NEAREST NUMBERS

Rounding the number means making a number simpler but keeping its value
close to what it was. The result is less accurate, but easier to use.

Example:

73 rounded to the nearest ten is 70, because 73 is

closer to 70 than to 80.

HOW TO ROUND UP THE NUMBERS ACCORDING TO THE PLACE VALUE

Example:

Rounding to a Place Value

Rounding to a place value is the one way to
estimate. Follow the below steps

Step 1 The number given 14,270. Step 4 14,270

Step 2 The least number starts in the

thousands place. 14,000

Step 3 Round each number to the nearest

thousands to find an estimate.

DIVISION

To divide is to split into equal parts or groups. It is the result of fair sharing.

It is represented by a symbol “÷”

EVEN AND ODD NUMBERS

Even Numbers: The number which can be divisible by 2 and leaves

the remainder as zero are called even numbers.
Even numbers always end up with the last digit as 2, 4, 6, 8.

Example:

2,4,6,8,10,12,14,16,18………….

SEQUENCE

Sequence is the arrangement of numbers in a systematic manner where

any mathematic rule may be applicable.

Example:

2,4,6,8……………..
In the above sequence number 2 is
added to each digit
2+2=4
4+2=6
6+2=8
