A-3 TARGET STRENGTH FOR MIX PROPORTIONING
fck’ = fck + 1.65 S
where
fck’ = target average compressive strength at 28 days,
fck = characteristics compressive strength at 28 days, and
S = standard deviation.
from Table 1 of IS 10262:2019, standard Deviation, S = 4 N/sqmm

fck' = 20 + 1.65 x 4 = 26.6 N/sqmm

Therefore Target strength for mix is 26.6 N/sqmm

A-4 SELECTION OF WATER CEMENT RATIO

From figure 1 (IS 10262:2019), the free water-cement ratio required for the target strength of 26.6
N/sqmm is 0.61 for OPC 53 grade curve. This is lower than the maximum value of 0.55
prescribed for ‘Mild’ exposure for reinforced concrete as per Table 5 of IS 456:2000.

Adopting W/C ratio of minimum of above two conditions i.e. 0.55

A-5 SELECTION OF WATER CONTENT

From Table 4 of IS 10262: 2019, maximum water content for slum of 50 mm and 20 mm
aggregate is 186 kg. Further, for slum of 100 mm water content estimated is 197.16 kg (at rate of
3% for every 25 mm slump).

= 197.16 - (197.16 x 0.15)

= 197.16 - 29.574
= 167.59 kg/cum
Hence, the final water content to be adopted is 167.59 kg/cum

A-6 CALCULATION OF CEMENT CONTENT

Water cement ratio = 0.55
Cement content = 167.59/0.55 = 305 kg/cum

From Table 5 of IS 456, minimum cement content for 'Mild' exposure condition is 300 kg/cum

Maximum cement content should not be greater than 450 kg/cum as per IS 456 (Table 5).

A - 3 of 5
Based on above calculations and condition specified cement content adopted = 305 kg/cum

A-7 PROPORTION OF VOLUME OF COARSE AGGREGATE AND FINE AGGREGATE

CONTENT

From Table 5, volume of coarse aggregate corresponding to 20 mm size aggregate and fine
aggregate (Zone 1) for water-cement ratio of 0.50 = 0.6

In the present case water-cementitious ratio is 0.55. Therefore, volume of coarse aggregate is
required to corrected

Therefore, volume of coarse aggregate = 0.59 cum

Volume of fine aggregate content 0.41 cum

A-8 MIX CALCULATIONS

The mix calculations per unit volume of concrete shall be as follows:
a) Volume of concrete = 1 cum
b) Volume of cement = [Mass of cement] / {[Specific Gravity of Cement] x 1000}
= 335.5 cum
c) Volume of water = [Mass of water] / {[Specific Gravity of water] x 1000}
= 0.17 cum
d) Volume of chemical admixture = 2.01 L
e) Volume of all in aggregate = [a-(b+c+d)]
= 0.703 cum
f) Mass of coarse aggregate= e x volume of coarse aggregate x specific gravity of fine aggregate x
1000
= 1112 kg
g) Mass of fine aggregate= e x Volume of Fine Aggregate x Specific Gravity of Fine Aggregate x
1000

= 764 kg

Mineral admixure (Fly-ash) = 7.50 kg
Coarse aggregate = 166.00 kg
20 mm = 100.00 kg
10 mm = 66.00 kg
Fine aggregate = 114.00 kg
Free water-cementitious material ratio = 0.50

Remark:

NOTE – Aggregates should be used in saturated surface dry condition. If otherwise, when computing
the requirement of mixing water, allowance shall be made for the free (surface) moisture contributed
by the fine and coarse aggregates. On the other hand, if the aggregates are dry the amount of mixing
water should be increased by an amount equal to the moisture likely to be absorbed by the
aggregates. Necessary adjustments are also required to be made In mass of aggregates. The surface
water and percent water absorption of aggregates shall be determined according to IS 2386.
