Ever since I was in junior high I knew I wanted to do something in the medical field.

What I wanted to do frequently changed, but it was always medical. Currently I am majoring in

therapeutic recreation and hoping to go into physical therapy. Completing the career assessment

and meeting with my advisor really opened my eyes to all the professions that I could go in to.

The career assessment was very interesting for me. There were a lot of professions that I

never even thought about pursuing. Some of the careers was a surgeon, many kinds of

professors, optometrist, and dentist. Some of these were very surprising to me because I don’t

really have interest in a lot of them. I was mainly surprised about being a professor. For a while I

did want to go into teaching so to know that I math up with being a professor is cool. I was,

however, surprised that most of my results were not in the medical field. I know I can’t solely

rely on the assessment to choose my career path, but it is a nice guide for the future. Once I

looked at all the non-medical jobs I became very interested and somewhat concerned if being in

the medical field and being a physical therapist is the right fit for me. Looking deeper into the

careers and seeing what they exactly were I became even more confused on my career choice.

Meeting with my advisor about my concerns helped me clear up all of my confusion and

uncertainty about my career choice. I explained to her that I was concerned with staying in the

medical field and wasn’t really sure if I knew what I wanted to do anymore or what field I really

wanted to go into. We looked at different majors together and explored many different fields. I

told her that I really like chemistry but my current major isn’t really chemistry based. Once we

started looking at majors that had more chemistry in them I realized that even though I like

chemistry it’s not something I want to have a lot of. My advisor suggested that I just take an

extra chemistry class where I have an empty space in my schedule. Then we started to look at all

of the popular majors for physical therapy. These majors are allied health sciences with an

emphasis on physical therapy, biomedical sciences, biology, and a few others that we did not

cover during my appointment. The reason they are most popular with physical therapy is because

a lot of the prerequisites for physical therapy are built into these majors. Even though these

majors would help me get to my ultimate goal I wasn’t really that interested in them. Part of the

reason being that I did not know what I could do with those degrees if I did not decide to go into

physical therapy or get accepted into their program. The other part being that therapeutic

recreation really does interest me a lot. Once I was done with my meeting I felt more confident

in the profession that I have picked.

Now that I have done the career assessment and met with my advisor I feel like I have

made the choice in what I want to do with the rest of my life. I tried to stay very open minded

throughout this assignment so I could get the most out of it. I found that the career assessment

was not an accurate fit for me, but it was nice to see all of the potential professions that I could

go into, and maybe in the future my thought and interests will change and I could go into a

profession that I never thought about. Meeting with my advisor was very helpful and it was nice

to get the information about all of the different majors. I plan on meeting with my advisor at least

two more times this year to make sure I’m on the right track and that I still feel the same about

my major and help prepare me for applying to the therapeutic recreation major and eventually

the physical therapy program.

I’m very glad that we had this assignment because it was a very eye-opening experience

to see what other professions do and what they are involved with. As of now I am sticking with

my original major in therapeutic recreation and sticking with my ultimate goal of becoming a

physical therapist.
