Electronic Circuit Design-Ii Lab: Experiment No. 3: Common-Collector Transistor Amplifier
Theory:
In Common-Collector (CC) amplifier configuration, AC input signal is applied to the
base terminal through a coupling capacitor and the output signal is taken from the emitter
terminal whereas collector terminal is common to both input and output signals. Common-
Collector amplifier is also known as emitter-follower configuration. It is used primarily for
impedance matching purposes. It provides voltage gain near unity, low output impedance,
high input impedance and high current gain. The AC voltage gain of a Common-Collector
amplifier (as shown in the Figure 3.1) can be calculated as:
RE
Av = ≅1 ………… (3.1)
R E + re
The AC input impedance is calculated as:
Zi = R1 || R2 || β (RE + re) …………. (3.2)
The AC output impedance is calculated as:
Zo = re ………… (3.3)

b. Apply an AC input signal Vsig = 20mV(p-p) at f = 1-kHz. Observe the output waveform
on the oscilloscope and make sure that there is no distortion (if there is distortion, vary
the input signal or check the DC bias). Measure the resulting AC output voltage Vo using
output channel 2 of the oscilloscope. At the same time, measure the input signal Vsig using
output channel 1 of the oscilloscope.
