Question #1:
(PLO2, CLO2, C4)
a) A synchronous motor with amortisseur windings is shown in the figure 1. Analyze the behavior
of machine in terms of induced torque, until the attainment of synchronization. Also draw its
phasor diagram.

b) Explain levitation control of Maglev Train. If the train is levitated beyond 3.9 inches, what are the
possible ramifications.

Question #2:
(PLO2, CLO2, C4)
A 208-V four-pole 60-Hz Y-connected wound-rotor induction motor is rated at 30 hp. Its equivalent
circuit components are
R1 = 0.100 𝛺; R2 = 0.070 𝛺; X M = 10.0 𝛺
X 1 = 0.210 𝛺; X 2 = 0.210 𝛺
Pmech =500 W ; P misc ≈ 0 ; Pcore =¿ 400 W
For a slip of 0.05, Analyze the following parameters.
i. Line current I L
ii. Stator copper losses PSCL , air-gap power P AG and Pconv
iii. Induced Torque τ ind , load torque τ Load
iv. Overall machine efficiency and motor speed in revolutions per minute and radians per
second

Question #3:
(PLO1, CLO1, C3)
a) Is it possible to use a machine other than synchronous generator as an exciter for starting
synchronous generator? Demonstrate your answer with the help of circuit diagram. (05)

b) A 230-V, 50 Hz, two-pole lossless synchronous motor draws 40 A from the line at unity power
factor and full load.
i. Solve for the output torque of this motor?
ii. What must be done to change the power factor to 0.85 leading? Explain your answer,
using phasor diagrams.

Question #4:
(PLO5, CLO3, C5)
a) Variable reluctance stepper motor is shown in figure 2. Design a stepper motor by replacing the
ferromagnetic material of the rotor by permanent magnets. What will be the effect this new design
on torque, speed and resolution of machine. (10)
