Histology: The study of tissues, BIO 231

After the completion of this lab, you should be able to:

• List each basic tissue type and state a primary function of each type.
• Explain how epithelial tissue is categorized.
• Identify each type of epithelial tissue on microscope slides and images.
o Describe a location and function for each type.
• Discuss the general structural components of connective tissue
o Discuss the specific cell types and features of each type.
• Identify each type of connective tissue on microscope slides and images.
o Describe a location and function for each type.
• Compare and contrast connective tissue proper versus specialized connective tissues
• Identify and differentiate nervous tissue cells.
o Describe the characteristics and functions of nervous tissue.
• List and compare the various muscle tissue types, discussing the main characteristics of each.
o Identify and differentiate the muscle tissue types on a microscope slide and pictures.

1. EPITHELIAL TISSUE

Structure of Epithelial Tissue: When naming epithelial tissue, always include the
number of cell layers followed by the shape of the cells. For example, stratified
squamous epithelium.

Number of Cell Layers:

Simple- One layer

Stratified- more than one layer

Shape of Cells:

Squamous-

Cuboidal-

Columnar-

2. CONNECTIVE TISSUE

Structure of Connective Tissue: Connective tissues contain cells and extracellularmatrix,

which can contain fibers and ground substance.

• Cell types: Fibroblasts, Chondrocytes, Osteocytes, Adipocytes, Blood cells

• Extracellular Matrix:
o Fiber type: Collagen, Elastic, Reticular
o Ground Substance: fluids, proteins, proteoglycans
