During my journey of this Indian Railway pursuit, my guide Prof.ALDRIN M.A.,

M.PHIL. Assistant Professor, Department of English, Loyola College, Chennai greatly

inspired and guided me with her profound knowledge in the field of Indian Railway. I am very

grateful and deeply indebted to her as she is the main inspiration for my choice of Indian

Writing as my area of interest and also for giving the necessary corrections and channelizing

my thoughts to bring my ideas in a better form.

College, Chennai and to Dr. K.S.Antonysamy, Head of the Department of English, for giving

me this opportunity to write a research paper as a part of my B.com programme. This paper

will help me in my future research.

RESEARCH ABOUT RAILWAYS
The topic speaks about why ANNA NAGAR station shuted in recent days. One of the

most populated and richest area in Chennai, Annagar railway station. The tradegy event

commenced on 2004 while people asked Government of railway to implement a way from

Annanagar – MAS/ MSB. It was commenced on 2006 as public wish but merely halted on

2010 due to the construction of Flyover connecting padi, villivakkam, Kolathur and CMBT /

Annanagar. After the construction of Flyover finished the railway does not run the rail again,

because there are another new hindrance is that the Metro railway. After the metro, people

started to use metro rather than other transportation, so the Southern India Railway sold the

terminus to Indian Coach Factory for test rail on that terminus, but people again suggested to

reactive the railway. The real problem arose here that the Indian Railway Agreement was

poned till 50 years.


PADI AND ANNANAGAR STATION

Here we can the understand the idealogy of why the station in main area were shutted

in short span of time and the things which made it to close the PADI and ANNANAGAR

STATION in main permises.

This is my research were about the treatment where the station once

engaged and the time of shutting it.

Idea:

I just went to that area and search about the clues why the station are still

engaged and why not for the engagement of passengers.

I merely expected the clues but then again its not sufficient for me to go further.

According to 2007 journel of railways (Chennai) the actual reason is LOW DESCRIPTION

LEVEL OF PROFIT.

Supporting Points:
Anna Nagar (formerly known as Naduvakkarai), is a neighbourhood in the metropolitan
city of Chennai, India. Named after the Tamil leader C. N. Annadurai, it is located in the
north-western part of Chennai and forms a part of the Aminjikarai taluk and the Anna Nagar
Zone. It is one of the prime residential areas in Chennai and is home to several prominent
doctors, lawyers and politicians. Real estate prices are among the highest in the city. A
recent addition to the area is VR Chennai Mall, located near Shanthi Colony and
Thirumangalam junction.

Anna Nagar is the first and the only township in Chennai to follow a standard addressing
system followed in the western world. One of the primary landmarks in Anna Nagar is
the Anna Nagar Tower, built in 1968 as part of the World Trade Fair. Other important
locations include the ANNA ARCH, Chinthamani, Blue Star, 14 shops, Shanthi Colony,
Thirumangalam junction, Padi grade separator, Anna Nagar East, and the Anna Nagar West
bus depot.

Anna Nagar has several established schools and colleges, places of worship, shopping
areas with both independent shops and chain stores, and numerous restaurants. The 2nd
avenue is an arterial road in Anna Nagar which has emerged as a hub for several restaurants
and shops. There are also a number of midsize hospitals and nursing homes catering to the
local population.

In a small brick room near platform number one at the defunct Anna Nagar railway

station, two police personnel attached to the Railway Protection Force look busy. While one

of them is peering into the computer screen, the other checks the entries in the register.

They are not alone in their work — three pairs of high-resolution CCTV cameras along the
platform are their allies.

For a defunct railway station, this seems like a lot of activity.

In 2003, a 3.09 km-long railway line, initially used by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF)
at Perambur for moving newly built coaches from shell to furnishing division of the factory,
was strengthened at a cost of ₹ 72.9 million for operating passenger services. Two new
stations, namely, Padi and Anna Nagar, were built and 13 existing bridges were renovated
and the work was completed in five months. The railway station and the EMU services were
inaugurated by the then Union Minister of State for Railways, A. K. Moorthy. Between
2003 and 2007, five suburban trains were being run from Anna Nagar to Chennai
Beach via Villivakkam. In 2007, the service was discontinued due to construction of a rotary
at the Padi junction replacing the level-crossing. Though the rotary was completed in 2009,
services were not restored. However, in 2011, the railways planned to resume services in
this section as a feeder service with six-car EMUs.

The tracks and land on which the station is built were originally owned by the ICF. When
the Southern Railway intended to operate trains to Padi and Anna Nagar stations, the ICF
handed over the land to the Southern Railway. When the train services were withdrawn in
2007, the ICF reclaimed the land from the zonal railway. The tracks and the stations are now
used by the ICF for moving spare parts to the manufacturing unit and back.

Anna Nagar railway station is one of the two, now defunct, railway stations of the
extended southern arm of the Chennai Central–Arakkonam section of the Chennai Suburban
Railway Network, the other being Padi railway station. It served the neighbourhood of Anna
Nagar, a suburb of Chennai. The station is located on Thirumangalam road, a road that
connects Anna Nagar West with Villivakkam, near New Avadi Road, away from the
commercial centre of the neighbourhood. The station is being maintained by the Integral
Coach Factory (ICF), the premier production unit of the Indian railways. 3.09 km-long

in this section. In addition, the traffic congestion resulting due to closure of a gate near the
Padi railway station limited the operation to five pairs of EMU services between Chennai
Beach and Anna Nagar.
The Southern Railway (abbreviated SR), headquartered at Chennai, is one of the 18 zones
of Indian Railways. It is the earliest of the 18 zones of the Indian Railways created in
independent India. It was created on 14 April 1951 by merging three state railways, namely,
the Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway, the South Indian Railway Company, and
the State Railway. The South Indian Railway was originally created in the British
colonial times as Great Southern India Railway Co founded in Britain in 1853 and registered
in 1859. Its original headquarters was registered as a company in London only in 1890. At
present, after re-organization of existing railway zones and creation of new zones
undertaken by the Indian Railways between 2002–03, Southern Railway has emerged as the
2nd largest zone after undertaking some gauge conversion projects and creation of new
lines . The system of consideration towards patronage can be interfere the function of rails
with 6 cars.
Three separate tracks, each 500 meters long and accommodating 20 coaches, are being
built on the northern side of the station. These lines will be used to park new coaches built
by the ICF until they are transported to their destinations. A 2-km long high-speed rail line
between the station and the ICF will also be laid at the station for conducting trials. The lines
will be used to test semi-high speed coaches running up to 160 km per hour.

The service, however, had a low patronage. The average daily counter collection at the
station is about ₹ 450, with just about 50 passengers. The monthly revenue never
exceeded ₹ 15,000 so far.
However, unlike the rest of the Chennai Suburban Railway network, there is only one line
in this section. In addition, the traffic congestion resulting due to closure of a gate near the
Padi railway station limits the operation to five pairs of EMU services between Chennai
Beach and Anna Nagar.
In a response to a public interest litigation filed in June 2013, the Railways announced
that "the decision to discontinue operations at Anna Nagar station was made due to
financial considerations. The per-day expense for operating train services between
Villivakkam and Anna Nagar costs about ₹30,000, while the income was only a few
hundreds.

The Southern Railway is headed by the General Manager (HAG+) Officer, assisted by an
Additional General Manager (HAG). Each department is headed by a PHOD\CHOD of the
rank of HAG\SAG.
In 2018, the ICF began to convert the defunct station into a social meeting point by
building a 500-meter walkers’ path at a cost of ₹ 1.5 million and providing seating
arrangements, lightings, security and other amenities. It also planted about 300 saplings at
the station. The meeting hub will cater to people from nearby residential areas such as
Villivakkam, Padi, Korattur and Anna Nagar. The residents are allowed in the station
premises both in the morning and in the evening. The overall cost of the project was ₹ 29
million, funded by the general funds of the ICF. Shri N. Gopalaswami Ayyangar - the then
Minister for Railways, was the principal architect of the regrouping of Indian Railways. In
December 1950, the Central Advisory Committee for Railways approved the plan for Indian
Railways into six Zonal systems, namely, the Northern, the North-Eastern, the Southern, the
Central, the Eastern and the Western.

The Southern Railway zone 9,654 kilometres was the first zone to be formed. Created on 14
April 1951 by the merger of the Madras and Southern Railway, the South Indian Railway and
the Mysore State Railway, the economic and geographical factors of this zone facilitated an
early integrated network. This amalgamation was a major step towards streamlining and
organizing the working pattern of the Railway system.Shri K R Ramanujam was appointed
the first General Manager of the newly formed Southern Railways.
The station is slowly turning into a railway yard for new coaches of the ICF and as well as a
repair shed.

Overcrowding of coaches at the Villivakkam railway yard, which has only two rail lines, is
said to be the reason for converting the railway station into an alternative railway yard.

Trials for new coaches are also being carried out at this station.

“As the rail line of the Anna Nagar railway station is in a good condition, we want to make
use of it in testing new coaches and repairing old ones,” says a railway official.

“A separate 3.09-km rail line rolls out from ICF to the railway station for this purpose.”

The Anna Nagar and Padi railway station was opened in 2003 on the Chennai –
Arakkonam suburban rail line.

Every day, on an average, five local trains were operated from Anna Nagar railway station
to Central railway station mainly through Villivakkam before the train services were ended
in 2007 due to poor patronage.

Currently, residents in the vicinity of the railway station are given membership by the
Southern Railway to use the facility for walking. Railway officials say that most of the
members are retired railway employees.

Membership is aimed at checking trespassing. In fact, the existing compound wall along
the railway station was raised by a few more feet to prevent trespassing especially at night.

For a lone time, residents have been demanding that operation of local trains from the
station be resumed as they have to go to Villivakkam or Korattur railway station to travel to
other parts of the city.

Thereby I conclude this research by waving the convent that Indian Railway have no
chances to re-open the rail from BEACH to ANNANAGAR station. All over suggestion by
public and by official near to that area intimated there is 10% chance to rerail.

As this research not have much relevant resources so I finally step into the public and the
Officials to conclude the research in useful manner.
