Based on NFPA 72, 2016 Edition
CEILING TYPES HEAT DETECTORS SMOKE DETECTORS
Flat Ceilings
1. Smooth Ceiling 1st HD < 1/2 listed spacing from side wall, 1st SD < 1/2 listed spacing from side wall,
then spaced up to listed spacing apart, or then spaced up to nominal spacing apart, or
all points on ceiling within .7 X listed spacing all points on ceiling within .7 X listed spacing
(17.6.3.1.1) (17.7.3.2.3.1)
2. Joisted Ceiling Reduce spacing by 50% perpendicular to joists Use smooth ceiling spacing unless the depth of the beam or joist is
(> 4" deep, < 3' apart) (mount on bottom of joist) (17.6.3.2.1 and 17.6.3.2.2) more than 10% of ceiling height AND spaced more than 40% of
ceiling height. (17.7.3.2.4.2)
3. Beamed Ceiling Reduce spacing by 33% perpendicular to beams See item No. 2
(4.1" - 12" deep, (mount on bottom of beam or on ceiling)
> 3' and < 8' apart) (17.6.3.3.1.2 and 17.6.3.3.2)
4. Beamed Ceiling Reduce spacing by 33% perpendicular to beams See item No. 2.
(> 12" deep OR > 8' apart) (mount on ceiling) (17.6.3.1.2 and 17.6.3.3.2)
5. Beamed or Joisted Ceiling (See Table 17.6.3.5.1 for ceilings over 10' high) See item No. 2.
(4.1" - 12" deep AND ceiling < 12' high)
6. Beamed or Joisted Ceiling (See Table 17.6.3.5.1 for ceilings over 10' high) See item No. 2.
(> 12" deep or ceiling > 12' high)
7. Beamed Ceiling Install HD in each bay See item No. 2.
(> 18" deep and > 8' apart) (17.6.3.3.1.3)

Peaked Ceilings
8. Peaked Smooth Ceiling Install 1st HD within 3' of peak, measured horizontally, Install 1st SD within 3' of peak, measured horizontally,
(> 1' in 8' rise-over-run) then smooth ceiling spacing until lowest HD is within then smooth ceiling spacing until lowest SD is within
1/2 listed spacing from low side wall (17.6.3.4.2.1) 1/2 selected spacing from low side wall (17.7.3.3)
9. Peaked Joisted Ceiling Install 1st HD within 3' of peak, measured horizontally, Install 1st SD within 3' of peak, measured horizontally,
(Joists up the slope) then reduce spacing by 50% perpendicular to the joists locate on ceiling within joist pockets, use smooth ceiling
(17.6.3.4.2.1 and 17.6.3.2.1) spacing withing joist pockets. (17.7.3.3 and 17.7.3.2.4.3)
See item No. 2 re: 10-and-40 rule
10. Peaked Joisted Ceiling Install 1st HD within 3' of peak, meausured horizontally, Install 1st SD within 3' of peak, measured horizontally,
