Challenges

High staff Turnover

The COVID-19 pandemic led to organizational changes that resulted in temporary

absences and perpetual lay-offs, making worker retention very problematic in the hospitality

sector. Courtyard by Marriott reduced workers to reduce the costs of operation and manage the

existing financial assets. Numerous workers also left because of unclear job expectations which

had made them unhappy and unsatisfied on the job (Garrido-Moreno et al., 2021). The staff that

was retained was forced to cope with the stressful working conditions.

Hiring and Retaining Staff

Another challenge that Courtyard by Marriott is facing is employing and retaining the

staff. Every hotel needs quality staff at all corners like in management, upkeep, kitchen, and

housekeeping. Lack of ability in the cultivated young people graduating from college is also a

key challenge in the hotel business.

Human Resource alignment with Business Objectives

The Courtyard by Marriott has a vision of offering amenities of high quality and

accommodation that are consistent to their guests. It aligns goals with its staff ‘s desire by

training them to be sociable and to give accommodating service to guests. They also assign staffs

where their skills can make the most considerable difference and make informed decisions

concerning salary, fairness, as well as performance. Aligning HR with the hotel’s business

strategy has helped increase employee performance and satisfaction

The Courtyard by Marriott Downtown Toronto should consider increasing wages to solve

the challenge of high staff turnover. They should also implement effective onboarding program

to keep new workers at par with the organizational objectives. They should offer more

opportunities for career advancement through continuous training and promotions. Also, they can

increase the remunerations, benefits, bonuses, and other incentives to motivate workers to

maintain their position

To deal with the challenge of hiring and retaining the staff, training the new personnel

regularly can be very helpful. To retain a qualified staff, the hotel should strategies such as

encouraging a sense of belongingness and value for the employees will make them devoted with

their works and infuse a sense of obligation in their thoughts.
