Apperception Test

USED FOR:

(TAT)
TAT is often applied on individuals to assess them one by one in order to deem their worthiness

for a certain job. The sectors that require their job prospects to be evaluated with TAT usually

demand dealing with people and ability to cope with psychological stress on a day-to-day

basis. For example: law enforcement, medical field, military, diplomatic service, and so on.

·TAT is also applied on people with mental issues, in order to diagnose them for their

psychological problems. TAT helps identify the personality of such individuals, thus helping them

to receive appropriate treatment.

PROCEDURE:
The TAT is popularly known as the picture interpretation technique because it uses a standard series of

provocative yet ambiguous pictures about which the subject is asked to tell a story. The subject is

asked to tell as dramatic a story as they can for each picture presented, including:

what has led up to the event shown

what is happening at the moment?

what the characters are feeling and thinking

what the outcome of the story was

If these elements are omitted, particularly for children or individuals of low cognitive abilities, the

evaluator may ask the subject about them directly.

There are 31 picture cards in the standard form of the TAT. Some of the cards show male figures, some

psychotherapy or other appropriate treatments.
Projective testing involves exposing an examinee to a

series of ambiguous stimuli (e.g. an image) and asking

them to provide their unique individual responses upon

perceiving the stimuli. This is done in order to prevent

biases on the part of the examinee. The ambiguity of the

stimuli does not give the person any hints as to what an

acceptable answer to the question is, which is the case

with other structured forms of psychological testing. For

example, in interviews or self-reports, individuals tend to

provide answers that may be more socially acceptable

and may even alter their responses based on how they

react to their answers. On the other hand, ambiguous

stimuli cause people to reveal their true feelings, which

are considered a more reliable measure of their

unconscious thoughts and behavior.

DEFINITION:
A personality test is a tool used to assess human personality. Personality

testing and assessment refer to techniques designed to measure the

characteristic patterns of traits that people exhibit across various situations.

Personality tests can be used to help clarify a clinical diagnosis, guide

therapeutic interventions, and help predict how people may respond in

different situations.

Personality is something that we informally assess and describe every day.

PROCESSES
When we talk about ourselves and others, we frequently refer to different

characteristics of an individual's personality. Psychologists do much the same

thing when they assess personality but on a more systematic and scientific

level.

USED FOR:
Personality tests are designed to systematically elicit information about a

person's motivations, preferences, interests, emotional make-up, and style

of interacting with people and situations. Personality measures can be in

the form of interviews, in-basket exercises, observer ratings, or self-report

inventories (i.e., questionnaires).

MEASURE
DEFINITION:
A gauge attained without disrupting the

involved party or alerting them to a gauge being

made. The actions or reactions of these involved

parties are thus presumed to be unimpacted by

the investigative procedure or the surrounding

climate.

PROCEDURE:
Unobtrusive measures are contrasted with interviews and questionnaires; in that they try to find indirect

ways to obtain the necessary data. The unobtrusive approach often seeks unusual data sources, such

as garbage, graffiti and obituaries, as well as more conventional ones such as published statistics.

Protocol
USED FOR:
A think-aloud (or thinking aloud) protocol is a method used to gather data in usability testing in

product design and development, in psychology and a range of social sciences (e.g., reading,

writing, translation research, decision making, and process tracing).

PROCEDURE:
A typical procedure of think-aloud protocols would include:

Design the study and write the guide: Determine the number and type of participant for the study.

Generally, 5 participants would be sufficient. The next step is to write a guide that ask the

participants to complete the tasks intended with clear step-by-step instructions. In the script, there

should be reminders to participants to say their thoughts out when performing tasks.

Recruit participants: The team should set up a screener for eligibility of participants. After

contacting the person of interest and setting up meeting details such as time and location, the

team could also provide additional information to help participant better prepare for the activity.

Conduct think-aloud protocol: After stating the purpose and asking for consent, the team should

proceed by giving instructions to the participant. Ask open-ended questions and follow-up

questions. The team should avoid asking leading questions or giving clues.

Think-aloud protocols involve participants thinking aloud as they are performing a set of specified Analyze the findings and summarize insights: The team should use notes taken during the sessions to

tasks. Participants are asked to say whatever comes into their mind as they complete the task. This generate insights and to find common patterns. Based on the findings, the design team could then

Rorschach Inkblot Test
Rorschach test, also called the Rorschach inkblot test, in which a person is asked to

describe what they see in ambiguous inkblot images. This projective test often

appears in popular culture and is frequently portrayed as a way of revealing a

person’s unconscious thoughts, motives, or desires.
