Competitor Analysis

Carrefour

Carrefour is a French multinational corporation which operates 12,300 stores in more than 30
countries and one of them is Indonesia. The first Carrefour branch in Indonesia opened in
October 1998 in Cempaka Putih region of Jakarta. Carrefour Indonesia is currently managed by
CT Corp, and its shares are owned by Chairul Tandjung, an Indonesian businessman. Trans
Retail’s parent CT Corp acquired 100 percent of Carrefour Indonesia from Carrefour France in
late 2012. Now, Trans Retail operates 112 Carrefour hypermarkets and supermarkets across
Indonesia under the umbrella of four brands: Carrefour, Transmart Carrefour, Transmart, and
Groserindo Carrefour.
Enter strategy – Carrefour use a joint venture strategy to enter in almost all other country
include Indonesia. This is a good strategy for Carrefour to enter Indonesia market because
Indonesia has a different culture from its home country which can be difficult for Carrefour. By
using joint venture strategy, Carrefour work with a local partner who familiar with the market
which make it easier for Carrefour to enter in Indonesia market and make Carrefour success in
Indonesia.

Hypermart

Hypermart is an Indonesian retail chain that sells items for daily needs. Matahari Hypermart
was established on March 11, 1986 and the first Hypermart was opened in 2004 at Wahana Tata
Cemerlang Mall in Lippo Karawaci, Tangerang.
The numbers of Hypermart in 2013 is 99 stores which is growing every year since 2007. The
market share from 2007 to 2013 it around 30% each year and it is higher in every year. The net
revenue (Rupiah Billion) in 2010 and 2011 is less than 2009.In 2012 and 2013, the net revenue is
getting higher from 2011 (As it showed from the illustration).
This statistic shows that Hypermart in Indonesia is growing
in every year in both store expansion and net revenue.
Hypermart will be a competitor that Costco has to study
carefully and prepare to compete with it because Hypermart is
a local Indonesia store that is available in almost every city of
Indonesia and it also has benefit of reputation.
