LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET NUMBER: 7 (Quarter 1)

Multimedia Storage Devices, Sound/Video Cards and GUI

Name of Student: __________________________ Parent’s Signature: ___________

Grade and Section: _______________________________________________________

I. Introductory Concept

Every computer is accompanied with a storage device that may be internal

or an external one. They can virtually store all the software resources utilized by
an end user. Aside from storage devices, expansion cards such as Sound Cards and
Video Cards offers extended functionalities for the computer as well. To utilize them
and other software resources in your computer, you can navigate and manipulate
them using the Graphical User Interface (GUI).

This learning activity sheet will give you an in-depth explanation of Multimedia
Storage Devices, Sound Cards, Video Cards and GUI.

II. Learning Competencies

• Recognize the differences between primary and secondary storage devices

(TLE_IACSS9-12ICCS-Ia-e-28)
• Identify the different multimedia storage devices (TLE_IACSS9-12ICCS-Ia-e-28)
• Distinguish correctly the functions of multimedia storage devices (TLE_IACSS9-
12ICCS-Ia-e-28)
• Determine the use of video and sound card ports and connections (TLE_IACSS9-
12ICCS-Ia-e-28)
• Examine the Parts of a Graphical User Interface (GUI) (TLE_IACSS9-12ICCS-Ia-
e-28)
• Apply troubleshooting in dealing with Video Cards and Sound Cards
(TLE_IACSS9-12ICCS-Ia-e-28)

III. Activities

In the previous learning activity sheets you have learned the parts and
functions of a motherboard in the entirety of a computer system. Moreover, you

“Practice Personal Hygiene Protocol at all times.”

were able to familiarize yourself as to how the Complementary Metal Oxide
Semiconductor (CMOS) affects the performance and settings of your computer.

This time, you will begin another learning journey. Brace yourself and get
ready to take another flight to the succeeding concepts of computer systems.

|Multimedia Storage Devices|

 Primary Storage Devices

✓Primary Storage Devices can store and retrieve data, as they are feed into it. The memory of a
computer is the most important component of Central Processing Unit (CPU).
Examples:

Another primary memory example is Cache. Cache,
or CPU memory, serves as a high-speed memory access
area reserved on your computer's main memory or storage
device (Computer Hope, 2017)
Cache Memory is a special very high-speed
memory. This cache memory stores data or instructions

Points to Remember ✓
All of these terms may seem like a lot to learn and you may have the thinking that computers are
impossible to understand, but don't let yourself become overwhelmed. When many people hear the term
'primary storage,' they think of the hard drive on the computer But primary storage is actually where
the data you are actively using is being stored. In other words, whatever you are working on at the
moment is being held in primary storage. ( Stanley, L. n.d.).

REMEMBER THIS: A motherboard has expansion slots that can extend the
computer's functionality, like a video card or a sound card.

The expansion card is plugged directly into the expansion port so that the
motherboard has direct access to the hardware. However, since all computers have
a limited number of expansion slots, it's important to open your computer and check
what's available before you buy one.

|Video Cards | Sound Cards|

“Practice Personal Hygiene Protocol at all times.”

 Video Cards 

The video card is an expansion card

that allows the computer to send graphical
information to a video display device such as
a monitor, TV, or projector.

A video card is a piece of computer

hardware that's rectangular in shape with

to video displays and other devices (Fisher, 2019). since 1998. https://www.computerhope.com/jargon/v/video-
card.htm
What Video Card Do I
Have?
✓In Windows, the easiest way to see what video card you have is to use Device
Manager. You can find the video card listed under the Display adapters section.

✓Opening the computer case is another option, allowing you to see for yourself
what video card is installed. Do this if you plan to replace the video card, but
identifying information about it is best done through the mentioned above (Fisher,
2019).

How to Install or Update Video Card?

✓If you know what video card driver you need, you can go directly to the
manufacturer's website and manually download it. This is the best way to get
drivers because you can be confident that the driver is stable and doesn't
contain any malware.

✓If you don't know the specific video card driver that you need, or if you'd
rather not download and install the driver manually, you can use a free
program to automatically detect the driver you need and even download it for
you (Fisher, 2019).

 Sound Card 

✓The sound card is an expansion card that allows the computer to send audio
information to an audio device, like speakers, a pair of headphones, etc.

✓Unlike the CPU and RAM, the sound card isn't a necessary piece
of hardware required to make a computer work (Fisher, 2019).

A sound card is rectangular piece of

hardware with numerous contacts on the bottom of the
card and multiple ports on the side for connection to
audio devices, such as speakers or headphones.

Alternatively referred to as an audio output

device, sound board, or audio card. The sound card
installs in a PCI or PCIe slot on the motherboard for

Troubleshooting Techniques for Computer Sound Card issues

You don’t hear any sound output when you attempt to play mp3 or video files

• Check the volume control on your speakers and within Windows and make
sure it’s turned up and it’s not muted
• Check and make sure the speakers have power
• Make sure the speakers are plugged into the speaker ir audio output of your
computer

“Practice Personal Hygiene Protocol at all times.”

• Check the audio or video player that you are using and make sure the correct
audio output is selected within it
No sound is heard while attempting to play audio CDs

• Check the volume control and make sure it's turned up and not muted

• Connect headphones to the jack on the front of the DVD/CD drive(If it has a
headphone jack). If you hear sound, make sure the cd audio cable is connected
from the sound card to the DVD/CD drive's cd audio out.

• Check the speaker connections and make sure they are connected to the proper
jack. The jack will most likely be lime colored

The sound card isn't detected by plug and play

• Make sure the sound card is firmly seated in it's slot. Remove the card and reseat
it.

• From the device manager, select "Action" and then "Scan For Hardware
Changes".

• Attempt installing the sound card manually by selecting "Action" and then "Add
Legacy Hardware" in the device manager

You Hear Static When you Play Files

• Check the speaker cable for a firm connection or possibly a short in the cable

• Check the speaker volume controls. If while adjusting the volume controls you
hear static as you're turning the dial and it stops when you stop turning the dial,
the speaker volume controls may be defective or the speakers may be blown

When you play audio files, they skip or play abnormally

• Open the “Windows Task Manager” and under the “Performance” tab, check for
an excessive cpu load on your computer’s processor. If the cpu load is high
constantly, proceed to the “Processes” tab and search for processes in the list that
are placing an excessive load on your cpu. And depending on the process, you
may be able to terminate it and return your system back to a usable state. It just
depends on the particular process. If it’s an application that has crashed and you
have saved your work from the application, you may attempt terminating it’s
process in the “Task Manager’s” process list.

|Graphical User Interface (GUI)|

“Practice Personal Hygiene Protocol at all times.”

A Graphical User Interface (GUI) is a system of
interactive visual components of software. It
displays objects that convey information and
represent actions taken by the user. Objects change
color, size, or visibility when the user interacts
with them (Computer Hope, 2018). 2018)(Fisher

How Does a Graphical User Interface (GUI) Works?

Works?
It uses windows, icons, and menus to carry out commands, such as opening, deleting, and moving
files. Although a GUI operating system is primarily navigated using a mouse, a keyboard can also be
used via keyboard shortcuts or the arrow keys. (Computer Hope, 2018).
