We are now

going to test our

soil
Bolus: the ball of soil formed by manipulating the soil by hand.
Coherence: the ball or bolus of soil holds together.
Parent material: weathered and unweathered rock or soil from
which soil is formed.
Plasticity: the ball can be deformed and holds its new shape
strongly; typical of clays.
Shearing: sliding the thumb across the soil to form a ribbon.
Silkiness: the smooth, soapy or slippery feel of silt.
Sodic: soils with a high level of exchangeable sodium (can
lead to poor soil physical conditions).

Seed Growth

Growing Our Own Food

Carlisle - 2020
We are going to grow
our own pot of mixed
herbs over the course of
the semester

We need to start now so

we can (hopefully) have
plants by week 8!
Garlic Chives
Allium tuberosum

Unlike either onion or garlic, it has strap-shaped leaves with

triangular bases, about 1.5 to 8 mm wide.
It produces many white flowers in a round cluster (umbel) on
stalks 25 to 60 cm (10 to 24 in) tall. It grows in slowly expanding
[4]

perennial clumps, but also readily sprouts from seed. In warmer

areas (USDA zone 8 and warmer), garlic chives may remain
green all year round. In cold areas (USDA zones 7 to 4b), leaves
and stalks completely die back to the ground, and resprout
from roots or rhizomes in the spring.
Oregano
Origanum vulgare

Oregano has purple flowers and spade-shaped, olive-green leaves.

It is a perennial, although it is grown as an annual in colder
climates, as it often does not survive the winter.
Oregano is planted in early spring, the plants being spaced 30 cm
(12 in) apart in fairly dry soil, with full sun.
Oregano will grow in a pH range between 6.0 (mildly acidic) and
9.0 (strongly alkaline), with a preferred range between 6.0 and 8.0.
It prefers a hot, relatively dry climate, but does well in other
environments. [8]
Sweet Basil
Ocimum basilicum
Basil is an annual, or sometimes perennial, herb used for its
leaves.
Depending on the variety, plants can reach between 30 cm
and 150 cm. Its leaves are richly green and ovate, but
otherwise come in a wide variety of sizes and shapes
depending on cultivar. Leaf sizes range from 3 cm to 11 cm
long, and between 1 cm and 6 cm wide.
Basil grows a thick, central taproot. Its flowers are small
and white, and grow from a central inflorescence that
emerges from the central stem atop the plant
Cilantro
Coriandrum sativum

It is a soft plant growing to 50 cm tall.

The leaves are variable in shape, broadly lobed at the
base of the plant, and slender and feathery higher on
the flowering stems.
The flowers are borne in small umbels, white or very
pale pink, asymmetrical, with the petals pointing away
from the center of the umbel longer (5–6 mm or 0.20–
0.24 in) than those pointing toward it (only 1–3 mm or
0.039–0.118 in long).

Assignment

So with the planting of our plants complete,

we are going to have to take care of them
for the next few weeks and monitor their
growth.

So what do we have to do?

Assignment
1 At first you are going to
mist them and keep the soil
moist for the first few
weeks. This will allow the
plants to start growing

2 Once they start

growing we will move
them to a larger pot

3 At this point we are going to

start recording observations
and measurements
