ANCHOR

WHAT ARE ANCHORS


Anchor is a mettalic hook, attached to a length of chain or rope, called the cable,
by which a ship or a boat can be held temporarily to the sea bed, usually in
shallow waters.

An achor has the

7. Crown

TYPES OF ANCHORS BASED ON POSITION
•BOWER ANCHOR: A ship’s main anchor is called Bower Anchor.

•SHEET ANCHOR: A sheet anchor is traditionally carried for safety sake, that is,
as a back up for the main anchor.

•STREAM ANCHOR: A stream anchor is used as a stern anchor by some ships

HOLDING PULL
Holding pull refers to the efficiency of the anchor compared to conventional
anchors
Admiralty Pattern Anchor is 3 to 3.5 times more efficient than conventional
anchors.
Admiralty Standard Stockless – 3.5 times
Admiralty Class 12 and 14 – 10 times
Admiralty Class 16 – 2.6 to 3.6 times
Admiralty Class 17 – 7 times

In the Indian Navy, prominently 5 types of anchors are used.
