REACTION PAPER
Our environment has suffered greatly as time passed by, and this caused a significant
impact on our human lives. Human activities started to affect our climate and keeping a healthy
balance in our environment is no longer a choice in such a time. With this in mind, landscape
architecture is concerned with designing healthy environments and communities, as well as
people’s health and well-being.
As discussed by Mrs. Sara Protasoni, the word landscape should always relate to the
word responsibility that binds the work of the architects and the citizens in the environment and
to be honest, I think this is true. As an architecture student myself, architecture is not just all about
designing and constructing a building, but more on solving a problem by means of designing and
imposing solutions to our clients. Most importantly, architecture can also be about landscaping by
means of creating an environment that includes both the natural and social worlds. Having said
that, our goal is to always keep in mind the safety of our clients and assuring long-term
sustainability.
In addition, Mrs. Protasoni also said that understanding the relation between what is
nature and what is artificial is important. When we talked about nature, it simply means all the
existing species and plants in a self-sustaining area while artificial requires assistance from
humans due to its limitation. For me, having a clear understanding of these two terms will also
help me recognize the sole purpose of my design. For instance, if I were to design an area where
there is a huge percent of vegetation, I would automatically be sure to use all, and if not, most of
these, on my site development plan. Why? Because vegetations are important as it provide
additional protection from the sun, help regulate temperature, adds thermal insulation, and brings
aesthetics to the site.
Furthermore, the new landscape architectural requirements, when taken together, allude
to a new global vision of shared goals among people, which is a sustainable development goal.
We should define national strategies for sustainable development that address economic growth,
social inclusion, and environmental protection quickly and consistently. Anything we introduce in
terms of transformation, in general practices, should deal with the reality's problems and should
at the very least bring us closer to the realization of the main goal on a global level and not just
for the sake of being called an Architect.
It is also impossible to create and sustain the beauty of landscapes, parks, and gardens
without paying attention to the deeper needs of humans, plants, and animals in landscape design,
which is true, because landscaping is not just about adding beauty to an area but also assigning
a new function for the area that will contribute to the human, plant, and animal life.
In conclusion, landscape architecture, in its pursuit of three-dimensional beauty, is always
focused on dealing entities, but it is also constrained by sources. The goal is to get the most effect
in terms of function and beauty with the least amount of effort, cost, and need to change the
natural environment. To create beautiful places, it is necessary to combine the environmental
approach with the traditional concept of landscape.
