TECHNIQUES
WOODCUT The oldest form of
printmaking, woodcut is a
relief process in which knives
and other tools are used to
carve a design into the
surface of a wooden block.

ETCHING It is an intaglio printmaking


process in which lines or areas
are incised using acid into a
metal plate in order to hold
the ink. In etching, the plate
can be made of iron, copper,
or zinc.

ENGRAVING It is an intaglio printmaking


process in which lines are cut
into a metal plate in order to
hold the ink. In engraving, the
plate can be made of copper
or zinc. The metal plate is first
polished to remove all
scratches and imperfections
from the surface so that only
the intentional lines will be
printed.
LITHOGRAPHY It is a printing process that
uses a flat stone or metal
plate on which the image
areas are worked using a
greasy substance so that the
ink will adhere to them by,
while the non-image areas are
made ink-repellent.

SCREENPRINTING It is the process of


transferring a stencilled
design onto a flat surface
using a mesh screen, ink and a
squeegee. Fabric and paper
are the most commonly
screen-printed surfaces, but
with specialised inks it's also
possible to print onto wood,
metal, plastic, and even glass.
