Boil Out (or Alkaline Cleaning)

Purpose: to remove grease, clean welding iron powder, and passivation of fire pipes, to
prevent corrosion and deposition problems in the boiler drum when the boiler is already
operating.

Applied for new boilers and boilers that have been overhouled before the boiler starts up /
running.

Chemicals (for holding volume /HV 100 m3):

Na2HPO4 (disodium phosphate): 1000 ppm vs. Holding volume of boiler drum (100 m3) = 100
Kg,

Na3PO4 (trisodium phosphate): 2500 ppm vs. Holding volume of boiler drum (100 m3) = 250
Kg,

Surfactant : 250 ppm vs. Holding volume boiler drum (100 m3) = 25 Kg (or the dose is adjusted
according to the recommendation from the vendor / seller). May not be used.

Caustic (NaOH): enough to set pH 10 – 11.

Antifoam: sufficient, to remove foam (or as recommended by the vendor) or may not be used .

Hydrazine (hydrazine concentration after application is set around 250 – 500 ppm as N2H4)

Procedure:

Fill the boiler with Demin water and inject all chemicals into the Boiler through the chemical
tank, in the following order:- Na2HPO4 (disodium phosphate) & Na3PO4 (trisodium
phosphate). For chemicals in the form of powder, before being poured into the chemical tank,
they are first dissolved using Demin water. Should be dissolved in hot water because both
chemicals are very difficult to dissolve.

Caustic (NaOH) , sufactant and antifoam if needed.

Close / disable all blowdown facilities.

Close the steam condensate return valve.

Heat the boiler to 2-5 bar, hold the pressure 2-5 bar for a maximum of 24 hours. The selection
of bar pressure is adjusted to the boiler operating pressure.

Check iron content and turbidity every 2 hours.

After the boil out is complete, discard the solution in the boiler by adding feed water (Demin
water), until the blowdown water is clear.

Steam Flush
Purpose: flushing the new steam line/header to remove impurities in the steam line and
passivation of the condensate line, to prevent corrosion and deposition in the steam &
condensate line. Chemicals:

1. Scale & corrosion inhibitor : Operating dose (ppm) x Operating cycle divided by Holding
volume of boiler drum (

2. Oxygen scavenger : 2 x Operating dose (ppm) x operating cycle divided by Holding volume of
boiler drum

3. Condensate treatment : Operating dose ( ppm) x operating cycle divided by Holding volume
boiler drum Working procedure :

Make sure that in feed water and boiler water, the content of Calcium Hardness is < 1 ppm or
trace

Put all the chemicals into the Boiler through the Feed water tank, first dissolve it in the form of
powder.

Heat the boiler to normal operating pressure, open all steam line valves and steam traps, for 8
hours non-stop.

Activate the automatic blowdown facility.

After Steam blow (make sure if there is no rush in the steam line), the boiler can be operated
immediately, but if the boiler has not been used for more than 2 days, perform the Boiler lay-
up procedure.
