Determination of damper constant
Apparatus
The apparatus consists of a rigid aluminum section base frame, various attachments and a control
unit. The base frame is mounted on rubber feet to prevent vibration being transmitted to the
mounting surface. The attachments can be positioned anywhere on the base frame. The central
component of the apparatus is the elastic torsion bar. The apparatus designed especially for the
experiments covering a wide range of subjects relating to torsional vibration.
Experimental Procedure
1. Measure out distance of fall. If apparatus is installed on a bench, it is advisable to choose
the distance between the top edge of the bench and the floor
2. Set damper constant by way of damper adjusting screw. Fully screwed out (anti-clockwise)
indicates minimum damper effect. Fully screwed in (clockwise) indicates maximum
damper effect
3. Starting from the min. damper effect it is appropriate to screw in the adjusting screw 1/2 –
1 turn per experiment
4. Attach 5 N weight
5. Wrap rope around disc until weight is in upper starting position
6. Release disc and use stopwatch to measure the time taken to cover the measurement
distance
7. After a brief, negligible acceleration phase the weight runs at a constant speed
8. Repeat experiment with a different damper setting
Where
F = Applied Load
r = Radius of Disc
s = Distance travelled by the weight
T = Time taken by weight to reach at the ground
