WHAT IS SPACE FRAME SYSTEM?

In architectural design

 This system is a truss-like, lightweight, rigid

structure manufactured from interlocking struts in a
geometric pattern.
 can be utilized for large areas with few interior supports.
 It is constructed from interlocking struts in a
geometric pattern.
 Designed with no intermediate forms to create a
large open area.
 is the simplest form of structure which is the
horizontal slab of interlocking square pyramids main rebuild from
the aluminum or steel struts.
 Space frame structures are light in weight and very easy
to handle and transport from one place to another.
 Have very little deflection and
consistent higher compressive as well as tensile loads

- Just like in the video shown earlier there are intricate design t be
able to form this kinds of structures which would be further
discussed on the report.
-

SPHERICAL DOMES
- Spherical domes are made of an intricate network of steel
sections
- Typically, the use of tetrahedral modules or pyramids and
additional supports are required from the skin
- All elements are in one single layer
- is made up of a complex network of triangles.
- Each of the connected triangles forms a self-bracing structure.
- This type of structure is fragile despite being structurally strong.
The common connections for this space frame structure is Unistrut and
mero with spherical connectors which would be discussed later.

Example

- Eden Project in Cornwall, England

by Nicholas Grimshaw
The complex is dominated by two huge enclosures consisting of
adjoining domes that house thousands of plant species,[3] and each
enclosure emulates a natural biome. The biomes consist of hundreds
of hexagonal and pentagonal ethylene tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE)
inflated cells supported by geodesic tubular steel domes. The larger
of the two biomes simulates a rainforest environment (and is the
largest indoor rainforest in the world) [4] and the second,
a Mediterranean environment. The attraction also has an
outside botanical garden which is home to many plants and wildlife
native to Cornwall and the UK in general; it also has many plants that
provide an important and interesting backstory, for example, those
with a prehistoric heritage.

So this project is used as biomes that would help different species of

plants and animals that creates a safe space for them to live in.

USES OF SPACE FRAME STRUCTURES

Space frame are common in large commercial and industrial buildings. Which was
mentioned awhile ago and These space frame mainly function as roofs and
canopies.

CONNECTORS

  Unistrut
- Its joint consists of a connector plate that is press-formed from
steel plate.
- The members are channel-shape cold-formed sections and
are fastened to the connector plate by using a single bolt at each
end.
- The connectors for the top and bottom layers are identical
and therefore the Unistrut double layer grids consist of four
components only, i.e., the connector plate, the strut, the bolt, and
the nut
- The maximum span for this system is approximately 40 m with
standard modules of 1.2 m and 1.5 m.
NEXT SLIDE
  Mero, with spherical connectors
-  Its joint consist of a node that is a spherical hot pressed steel
forging with flat facts and tapped holes.
- Members are circular hollow sections with cone-shaped
steel forgings welded at the ends, which accommodate connecting
bolts.

So Unistrut and mero are the two most commonly used connector in the
spherical domes
