Alex Martinez-Research Proposal
Alex Martinez-Research Proposal
As a second-year engineering student, I understand it is not enough to showcase grades but also to
enhance my collegiate career by exploring external opportunities, such as research. It has allowed
me to understand concepts taught in lecture and apply them from a hands-on perspective in the lab.
As a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, I have been able to participate in the
Concrete Canoe Team since Fall 2020.
Despite the large impact in the 2020-21 academic year, I have been able to grasp and learn about
this entire process. I am involved in the mix design, testing and casting process for the canoe. In the
fall semester, we mainly focus on mix design and testing concrete cylinders to produce the most
durable and workable material. In the spring semester, we cast the canoe and represent the
University at a regional conference. I have learned to gain practical skills and have made lasting
friendships through this project.
Research is an important aspect for learning and understanding the real world. My involvement in
the Concrete Canoe Team will be beneficial in the future when applying for internships and other
work experiences.
