GOJAN ARINA

Being a EU citizen:
Our Dream
I grew up and, to this day, live in the Republic of Moldova. Even though our
country is beautiful and I love it, we have little to no opportunities outside of it.
Because of this it is a goal, a dream even, for everyone to be a EU citizen.
First and foremost, we have a big amount of work places but awful salaries. For
anybody 200-250 euros is a very small amount of money, for us, it is the average
salary. Every year people emigrate to Italy, Germany, Romania and many other
European countries so that they could feed their families. Most mothers are going
ahead and getting jobs like cleaning ladies or caretakers for senior citizens so that
their children in Moldova could live a normal life. Having a Romanian citizenship or
being a citizen in the country in which they work makes it easier for them to travel for
work and back home.
Secondly, for youngsters it gives us the opportunity to study in good universities. It
isn't as if we don't have universities, the problem is that our university diplomas are
accepted only in our country and, sometimes, in Romania. So everyone who wants a
better education becomes a Romanian citizen. It's sad that we all have to go to other
countries to learn and most of us never come back to the country. Everyone stays in
the country in which they studied so that they would, as I stated before, get good
salaries.
Thirdly, being in the EU, if we talk about the whole country, would mean that we
would start to develop faster and become more stable on an economical level.
Honestly it would give us protection against the countries which are threatening us
and also it would be easier for us to travel around the world. We would have a stable
life and there would be less poverty. Parents wouldn't worry anymore about their
children's future and many of our family members would come back home.
In a nutshell, I am full of hope that, maybe, one day we will get the golden ticket
to freedom and will finally get out of all of our problems. It would give us normal
salaries, our diplomas would be accepted everywhere and our children will finally
have a stable and bright future. As someone who has emigrants in their family, I can
say that it is hard for them to be far from their beloved home and maybe soon they
will be back here.
