of industrial and commercial management.

Stone industry refers to the part of primary sector of the economy, similar to
mining industry, but concerned with excavations of stone in particular granite,
marbles, slate and sandstone. Stone industry is one of the oldest in the world.
Creation of stone tool in the region of South Africa has been dated to about 60000-
70000 years ago. Granite and marble mining existing as far back as Ancient Egypt.

India is one among the leading countries in mining and export of granite and is rich
in granite reserve. Geographically states like Tamil Nadu, Telangana
AndraPradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Orissa and may other states have plentiful

9
in stone deposits. Indian granite stone become the most sought after and generally
utilize mineral material in building constructions and large structure works
throughout the world. It is very popular in the global marketplace, for its elegance
and tasteful quality as well as its performance.

CHAPTER-2

INDUSTRY PROFILE

13
INDUSTRY PROFILE

Granite is a stone formed from fire and consists of quartz, feldspar and mica This
stone was once a molten flowing mass much like lava, and as it cooled down it
became very dense and hard, In fact, granite is second only to diamonds in its
hardness. Because it is resistant to blistering, scratching, cracking and scorching,
granite is the number one choice in natural stone for kitchen, bath and commercial
countertops. Polished granite, with its high gloss reflects light beautifully, adding
elegance to any room or space. The high gloss finish will never wear of Granite is
easy to clean with just warm water and soft cloth Granites are quarried through the
world in the form of huge blocks and then reduced into slabs. These slabs are then
carefully crafted and fabricated by a fabricator to the form you desire. Granites
have different patterns or veining Many stones rarely change in their tight quartz-
like appearance while others have veins that swirl and change irregularly. Small
samples cannot give a good overall picture of a high movement stone, it is this
mason that we recommend to view the slab prior to the selection or fabrication.

Granites come from all over the world India, Egypt, Spain. Brazil, Norway and
Mica to name few. Canada and the United States also produce some very lovely
granite as well. Where the stone originates has a high impact on the cost of the
stone because of transportation and labor. Red granites and blue granites tend to be
priced a bit higher than the other colors because they are rarer.

GRANITE CHARACTERISTICS

Granite is an igneous rock formed by volcanic action and consists mainly of

quartz, silica, mica obsidian and feldspar with a blend of other natural minerals.

14
The composition varies from quarry to quarry. Granite is the only natural stone
suitable for kitchen countertops. This relates to its hardness, resistance to scratches
and its minimal absorption. It can also be used for fireplace surrounds and vanity
tops. Below are some general physical characteristics, which also vary by stone
type.

 HARDNESS: Based on the MOH scale of one to ten with diamonds being
ten (10), most granites fall within the range of seven (7) or eight (9) It is
extremely scratch resistant. So, while a careless slip of the knife will scratch
most other countertops such as solid surfaces, it won't leave a mark on
Granite. Although Granite is durable it is not scratch-proof. But close.
 NATURAL FISSURES: Granite contains natural fissures, which appear as
cracks. These visible hairline cracks are formed during the solidification
process. Earthquakes or land movement can also cause fissures: Fissures are
random and will vary from one type of granite to the next.
 COLOUR VARIATION: Samples represent the general colour and pattern
of a colour of granite only. Exact duplication cannot and will not be
guaranteed. This is why at Bay Area Stone & Tile we let you pick your own
slab! Granite, being a natural product will have variation in o and shading.
This is a unique characteristic of natural stone and is to be expected. India is
one of the leading countries in ruining and export of granite and is rich in
granite reserves. Geologically the southern and eastern belts of the nation are
abundant in granite deposits, Different shades of Granite are available in
abundance in mil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Assam,
Bihar, Rajasthan, Odisha, Meghalaya and Madhya Pradesh.

15
India possesses a wide spectrum of dimensional stones that include granite,
marble, sandstone, limestone, slate, and quartzite, spread out all over the
country. India is also amongst t
he largest producer of raw stone material and the sectors is quite developed
and vibrant in the South, as well as in Rajasthan and Gujarat, with a
dedicated resource of entrepreneurs. India also has an indigenous resource of
machinery and tool manufacturers which cater well to the demands of this
sector. Operations that are involved in the processing of Granite are:
 Dressing
 Cutting/Sawing
 Surface Grinding and polishing

HISTORY OF GRANITE
Granite is a common type of felsic intrusive igneous rock that is granular
and phaneritic in texture. Granites can be predominantly white, pink, or gray
in color, depending on their mineralogy. The word "granite" comes from the
Latingranum, a grain, in reference to the coarse-grained structure of such a
polycrystalline rock By definition, granite is an igneous rock with at least
20% quartz and up to 65% alkali feldspar by volume
The term "granite" means granite-like and is applied to granite and a group
of intrusive igneous rocks with similar textures and slight variations in
composition and origin. These rocks mainly consist of feldspar, quartz, mica
and amphibole minerals, which form an interlocking, somewhat
equigranular matrix of feldspar and quartz with scattered darker biotite mica
and amphibole (often homblende) peppering the lighter color minerals.

16
Occasionally some individual crystals (phenocrysts) are larger than the
groundmass, in which case the texture is known as porphyritic. A granitic
rock with a porphyritic texture is known as granite porphyry. Granit is a
general, descriptive field term for lighter-colored, coarse-grained igneous
rocks. Petro graphic is required for identification of specific types of
granitites.
Granite differs from granodiorite in that at least 35% of the feldspar in
granite is alkali feldspar as opposed to plagioclase: it is the potassium
feldspar that gives many types of granite a distinctive pink color. The
extrusive igneous rock equivalent of granite is hyalites. Granite is nearly
always massive (lacking any internal structures), hard and tough, and
therefore it has gained widespread use throughout human history, and more
recently as a construction one. The average density of granite is between
2.65 and 2.75 g/cm (165.4-171.7 b/ft), its compressive strength usually lies
above 200 MPa, and its viscosity near STP is 3-6 10 Pas.
Granite and related marble industries are considered one of the oldest
industries in the world, existing as far back as Ancient Egypt. Major modem
exporters of granite include China, India, Italy, Brazil. Canada, Germany,
Sweden and Spain. Indian granite quarries have been mired in controversy
over child labor and slavery.

MCKINSEY’S 7S MODEL

McKinsey’s 7S FRAME WORK MODEL The 7s model is better known as

McKinsey’s 7s. This is because the two persons who developed this model. It is
developed by Tom Peters and Robert Waterman. They published their 7s model in
their article “structure is not organization” (1980) and in their books “the art of
Japanese management” (1981) and in search of excellence (1982).

33
Chart no 3.1

The 7s model is a tool for managerial analysis and action that provides a structure
with which to consider a company as whole. So that the organization problems
may be diagnosed and a strategy may be developed and implemented.

The 7s of McKinsey’s Model

• Strategy structure
34
• System

• Style

• Staff

• Skill

• Shared values

These are the 7 S elements are distinguished in so called hard S and soft S’s. the
hard elements are feasible and easy to identify. They can be found in strategy
statements corporate plans organizational charts and other documentations.

The four soft S’s however, are hardly feasible. They are difficult to describe since
capabilities values and elements of corporate culture are continuously developing
and changing. They are highly determined by the people at work in the
organizations. Although the soft factors are below the surface, they can have a
great impact of the hard structure, strategies and system of the organization.

McKinsey’s 7s frame work identified seven independent factors that need to be

managed in an integrated manner. The 7s factors UK Granite are as follows

 Strategy

Strategy is the set of the decision and actions plans, aimed at gaining a sustainable
competitive advantage. The main strategy of the main company is providing
quality products and better customer conduct. The company purchases the quality

organization including the management control system, performance management,
measurement and reward system, planning, budgeting, resource allocation,
Information system and distribution system. UK Granite’s production is the

 Style

The management approach towards decision making in the organization has a lot
of implications towards the overall organization development and growth. Every
organization has its own confirmed strategy to determine the style of decision

CHAPTER-5

38
LEARNING EXPERIENCE
AND

CONCLUSION

LEARNING EXPERIENCE

I did my internship (organization study) in Granite which incorporated with

KINFRA. It was helpful to analyze the real picture and realistic situation about the
organization. The organization study had a purpose of gaining experience in the
realistic world, to get organizations detail knowledge on the job responsibilities, to

39
compare with the real scenario with the lessons learnt in knowledge, to fulfill the
requirement of the MBA program.

The environment provided was very friendly and co-operative and it was a very
good experience. And the study helped the student to understand how an
organization functioning, how it furnished etc. the first chapter gives overall
picture of the organization which comes under granite industry.

It was a great experience that I had been at "UK Granites CO." for my internship.
There I visited various departments in the organization and I came across how the
real-life organization works. They have taught the line of command and whom and
when to report in a very formal way. I experienced importance of moral values and
work ethics from the employees of the organization. In the work situation I found
that the rules and regulations are laid down for maintaining discipline, good
employer-employee relationship and team spirit.

The study has enhanced my knowledge regarding the working of different areas of
management. I have been given opportunity to visit different departments where I
learnt various processes and responsibility of the employees towards the
organization. The people employed in the organization have special skills and
experience to enhance their job prospectus. This study has given me both practical
and theoretical knowledge about the organization

The UK GRANITES CO. has been maintaining excellence in their work and
management. The 15 days internship in the organization was worthwhile as it gave
me a chance to enhance my knowledge.

40
Conclusion

This study was concentrated on UK Granites Kasaragod and its functioning. I have
analyzed its Mckinsey'S 7S model That are, strategy of the organization, structure
of an organization, system used by the organizations to achieve its objectives, the
leadership style processed by the company, skills of the employees and shared

41
values of the organization. The UK Granites employees are highly enthusiastic as
they do their work, it is the main reason for the company to grow faster in
Kasaragod, also proprietor of UK Granites as good communication with his
employees which also help the employees to work hard. Even I have analyzed the
functioning on an organization and also analyzed the day to day activities of UK
Granites . I studied the company's business process and came to know that as the
manufacturing companies follow the same procedure how the other companies
follow.

I really appreciate the way i have been guided through this internship program with
UK GRANITES CO.from the opportunity to take the time i needed to refresh and
expand my knowledge in several areas concerning to process and product
manufacturing. Internship is a great platform for students to understand and adapt
to different work experiences. This was an excellent experience and i am sure that
the experience gained from this internship will help me to become familiar with the
ever-evolving working condition. This internship gained me the practical
experience about the corporate culture.

Overall, my internship at UK Granites CO. has been a success. I was able to gain
practical skills, work in a fantastic environment, and make connections that will
last a lifetime.
